i'm new to these calibers and am planning on buying one of them next week. I would like to hear some pros and cons on each of them to help me choose which one would be better. so let me have it guys...

well depends what you want to do with it , cost wise 30-06 shells are easy to find about $7-$10 cheaper than 300 win. But if you ask me i prefer the 300 , next question win mag or short mag .........ive got both, now my 300 win has less recoil than my 06 , it beats me

30-06 available everywhere and even surplus.... very versetile... and i am not a fan of and of the mag calibers... alot more boom and recoil and $$$ for ammo for not alot more gain.

    .
I like 30-06, 300 win has a short neck that bothered me reloading so I sold it. 300 Weatherby is much better.:)

Unless you are planning on large grizzles, polar bears, or larger African game; the 30-06 will do anything you need at a much cheaper price for ammo.

I like my 06. However there is nothing in Indiana that I can not kill with .223 or .243.

There is nothing in the WORLD that you can't kill with the .30-06 - with the right bullet and proper shot placement (if you need to, not saying its legal everywhere) ... W.D.M. 'Karamojo' Bell used to use the 7 x 57 to drop elephants ... and the '06 can hit A LOT harder than that. But it can be light loaded (store bought) and cheaper than a .300 win mag ...

AND - if you look at the Hornady Superformance ammo - the .30-06 is EQUAL to the regular .300 win mag in power - Reported Muzzle Velocity and Energy with same bullets, with probably less recoil. ... not sure what they did at hornady but these are loaded with some new proprietary powder to get this done.

i spent 10 years living and hunting out in Montana, i don't think there is anything on the Continent that i would worry about with a 30.06. good range! good everything!

on a side note the important thing to remember is the scope! get s good as you can get, 1. your shooting long 2. lots of recoil and cheap scopes dont hold up

i know the 30-06 would do just fine for what i would use it for. i guess i'm just looking for a bad*ss rifle to add to my collection. I went in there to look at the 30-06 and they had the same gun chambered in 300 win mag. I know the ammo is more expensive but not sure exactly how much either is. Anyone know the going rate for the two right now? i know online prices are usually way different from stores. i would like to stick to stores if possible....lets put it this way, if someone was giving you a choice for a free one and you could pick either the 30-06 or the 300 which one would you choose and why. I'm kinda getting this for the fun factor with the occasional cyote....decisions dicisions...

If you don't have an accurate scoped rifle larger than .223 than get the 30-06, in particular if you don't reload yet. The extra recoil, cost etc. is not worth the 200 to 400 fps you might get out of the 300 Win Mag for most general purpose applications.

The 300 Win Mag works well for very long range shooting, for larger game the 338 Win mag or similar is probably a better option.

I STRONGLY reccomend NOT buying this rifle. A good friend of mine the one in 300 win mag. We took it home and shot it, and both of us absolutely hated it. Cheap plastic, too light, kicks like a mule, should I go on? Unfortunetly he could not return it, but he sure tried. Later sold it for half of what he paid. Mossberg(yes I said Mossberg) sells a nice 30-06 for fairly cheap. And they are nice guns. I own one and love it. Not to big on their shotguns though  Good luck with the search!

I have a Rem. 710 30-06. I love it. of course im a sucker for punishment so it is fun for me to shoot. I do not reload so ammo for me is roughly 18-19 a box for 20 rounds.

So far i've only pulled the trigger 30 times on it, but i love it. (i do not hunt either :(

I would not buy anything based on the 710/770 action - period. It is not up to Remington's standards.

I like the recoilers but .300 win mag has no practical use in Indiana other than punching paper. You could get a light .308 or a wood stocked .30-06 and have just as much fun.
