OK, I am looking to purchase a new rifle and I am hung up on my caliber choice. I am looking at the Savage 10 BA in .308 or the 110 BA in 300 win. mag. (no I am not interested in paying $6+ per shot for the 338 Lapua, though it screams bad ass). I live in southern Indiana and only have access to a range of 200 - 400 yards at most. This will probably NOT be a rifle I would ever tote around the woods or carry out west (simply too heavy for most stalking tasks). I have all the reloading equipment and supplies for .308 and most will work with the 300 win. mag too (save the dies). Any information would be helpful in making my decision.

Any idea on effective barrel life from a 300 win mag?
    Thanks!

i dont recall exact numbers but i garentee a 300 winny barrel will not last as long as a 308. 300 pushes a heavier bullet faster wich is what hurts barrel life.

plus at those ranges i see no advantage at all to the 300. i do see plenty of disadvantages to the 300 like barrel life, brass price, sholder life to name a few.

defintally go 308 and that rifle is a wise choice aswell

42769vette nailed it. Get the .308.

If you ever want to know what it would felt like to shoot the 300 Win Mag, just load 190 grain bullets in the 308 and push them hard. They will thump you just about as hard as the Win Mag....

Thanks, these are all things I figured but wanted some reassurance. Another + would be the cost of the 308 is cheaper too...
    Thanks again

308 all the way....it's an incredibly hard to beat round when all things are considered.....if you decide to step up to 338 one day....go with 338 RUM...it's nearly identical to the Lapua without the as ridiculous cost

Yea bud, dont wast your money on the 300. They are super expensive to shoot if you dont reload, and they are murder on the shoulder if your planning on shooting it much. Also just wondering are you sold on getting into the B.A series Savage rifles because the Savage model10 series heavy barreled .308 would have no trouble at all hitting those ranges and save you a whole bunch of money and you could by a whole lot of ammo.

That is a good point the 10 FCP HS Precision is quite a bit less expensive. I have kicked it around (and still am). Just one of those crazy gun things...

Dont waste your money on the BA series. I have been there and done that.

the one w/ the HS precision stock will fit the bill of everything you have mentioned and then some.

I would go with the .308. Brass is more plentiful, and unless you're shooting at some extreme distance, the difference is negligible.

The .308 is the smaller brother, the 30-06 is the middle brother, and the .300 Win Mag is the big brother.

Another vote for the 308 not in BA. I have the FCP and love it. A cooler stock would be nice but not worth the $$$ that the BA costs.

    Beautiful rifle IndyGunworks.

I would lean towards the .308. The longer I'm around firearms the more I want to simplify the amount of calibers I have to deal with. For me there isn't a better overall mid range caliber.

I own and shoot both but I shoot the 308 more frequently due to the recoil. Unless you are shooting out beyond 800 yards, the 308 is fine. I've killed Elk & mule deer with both and they all died quickly. I feel the 308 is more accurate in my hands and maybe that has something to do with recoil energy. I vote for 308 but why not save up and buy both before inflation kicks in and we cant afford any of them. Good shooting.
