Have been looking at the top .308 semi rifles (M1A, L1A1, FAL, AR10, etc) and was wondering which is best in standard configuration when it comes to recoil?

I can't imagine how perceived recoil would be measureably different between the rifles that you listed.

Of course you realize that the AR15 is not available as a 308? It takes a AR10 to tango with the 308.

It is very different. I have owned and shot all of them. Cetme, FAL, and AR10 recoil far less than bolt gun and M1A.
I think it has to do with the recoils spring systems.
That is why I don't shoot the M1A, it HURTS my fragile shoulder.

BigDaddy, you are just a weenie though. These are the listed rifles the OP put in the post....M1A, L1A1, FAL, AR15.

You really think the M1A is harder recoil than the other ones?

I have won serious money shooting the M1A so I like it.

No exactly so. I've seen a .50 BMG upper on an AR 15 lower, It has to be a bolt gun at tht point, but a .308 on an AR 15 platform is technically possible.

That said, I see no perceieved difference in recoil between my AR10 and my Cetme-91

My 03A3 and Garand kick so hard, they make me cry! I am a weenie i guess, and the M1A really does have more felt recoil than the others.
Maybe I need to take lessons and make sure that my rifle fits me better.

I can't get over the recoil of two old battle rifles I have. One is a 1943 SMLE Lee Enfield in .303 British, and the other is a type 99 Japanese Arisaka in 7.7x58 Jap.

Both kick at least as bad as a Mosin.

A .308 has the perfect amount of recoil. Enough to know you've been kissed, but not so much that it owes you flowers the next day.

I am with bigdaddy, my M1A kicks more than other .308s that I have shot. I put alot of money into building it up just like i wanted it, and now I rarely shoot it b/c it is not that enjoyable :( Well, that and I don't have any place to really shoot that caliber.

Just buy a suppressor for whatever you get, it will help. I am saving up now for one in .30 caliber. Good luck

I weighed 155 lbs when the US Army and SFC Jerome Boxley taught me how to shoot the M14. Somehow I, and the rest of my Platoon, qualified with that hard kicking 7.62X51 rifle.:): (finest DI in the Army, IMO)

But then, I always preferred the 1911 over the M16 for airline travel to exotic locations in the US to defuse an IED . But that is a different story how I boarded an aircraft with 45 and C4... Everybody knows that EOD all walked funny..

I guess this discussion is kind of subjective.

    ^---I love it.

A good friend of mine has a FAL that I've fired quite a bit. It's not a whole lot more felt recoil than my ar15. Noticable, but definately not uncomfortable. Especially when compared to other calibers I've fired such as .30-06, 7mm RM, and a .45-70.

If only .308 was closer in price to .223...

Not really a kiss, more like a love bite

I have an HK91 and a Remmington 700 and I gotta say the 700 has a little more bite in the recoil than the HK. Neither are what I wou
D consider excessive. HK a bit more than a 20 gauge shot gun, the Remmington 700 a little less than a 12 gauge.

Thanks for all the response. I was leaning toward the M1a and may have to reconsider. I currently shoot a .308 bolt that kicks like a mule which I don't mind. However, my wife wants to start shooting and I'm afraid she'd be done after the first round. I'm going to be trading the bolt in for a semi.

Before you discount the M1A, consider changing the brake.

I originally went with a scout to get a shorter barrel and a more effective brake. While the folks in lanes next to me may have been holding their hands over their bleeding ears, I thought it shot soft and easy. I then switched to a Smith Good Iron and noticed it got better still. More recoil than a .223 AR-15, but similar to a Ruger Mini-30.

At this point, I have a Troy Medieval, but I am thinking about switching back to the Smith for the improved control.

If your up near South Bend, let me know and I could let you try it out.

Or just use the "trick" of using the riflemans sling to mitigate the recoil of the rifle in real field positions instead of shooting from the bench with free recoil blasting you.

None of us little 19 year olds needed muzzle brakes at Ft Knox basic training to handle the rifle and the powerful 308 cartridge.

None of the thousands (millions?) of recruits that learned to shoot the M1 Garand needed muzzle brakes either. The closest training you will find to learn this, is the Appleseed program or a Highpower Clinic.
