Certainly H4895 and IMR 4895 work great. VARGET, RE-15, AA2460, WIN 748 are not bad choices for the .308 either. The list of powders that work good in the .308 is really long.

    What is good for plinking?
I'm sure the list iis long any powders that make a big flash? Burn and leave 'soot/blackness'? Work well in an rcbs uniflow?

I agree with this. But I think IMR4064 is a great choice too.

Define plinking with a .308. I understand plinking with a 22. Been doing that since I was 7. Many pop cans have met their maker with my 22's.....

4895 is great but I switched to Varget. Seems cleaner to me and it works great in 223 and some of the other calibers I load too.

There are usually several powders that work well in any given cartridge. I like the versatility of H4895, because it's so easy to make accurate reduced-recoil plinking rounds with it.

It's also not bad for full throttle stuff. :)

Plinking to me means shooting appleseed targets at 25 and 100 yard range.
Which is what I indeed to do with a 308 rifle.
I only reload for .45 acp and .30 carbine
Use win 231 for .45, win 296 for .30 carbine
Have no plans to ever reload for .223/5.56 so don't need a powder that can work for other rounds other than 308. Don't see shooting beyond a 100 yard range since only other range Ihave access to is a single lane 200 yard range and don't see using sight irons on that. =)

Dont forget H335, its good too. I usually go back and forth with it an 4895 in my 308. I mean sure theirs powders with wil get u another 100fps, but my gun is a savage 99 so im not looking for that last 100fps. I would give 4895 a little edge as u can load some light loads with it for practice with recoil sensitive peeps.

I use Varget for my .308.. I get amazing performance out of it.. I can stack bullets at 100 yards.. I can figure out how to get pictures on here.. If I could I would show ya a target..

IMR4320, with heavier bullets, is about the slowest powder that would still be a good option for 308.

My bolt gun likes Varget and it seems to work really well with 168 gr. AMAX bullets. I have some 110 gr VMAX loaded too....just haven't had a chance to shoot them yet.
