Just thinking aloud here (actually in type). Has anyone tried necking down the 500 Smith to 357? Just curious as to what kind of velocities could be attained compared to .357 max and 35 Rem.
I have a 357 max. It is a rechambered 357 mag handi rifle. I haven't had a chance to shoot the 180 SSP bullets. I have killed 10 deer using the 200gr FTX. Ranges from 25 yds to 244 yds. Was thinking of something that could be chambered in the Handi-rifle and shoot flatter. I kinda wonder of the twist should be a little tighter than what I have.(1-18.75). Would 1-14 twist be better? My gun did not like 158gr xtp when I tried them.
Klude, what part of the state are you from. I've read your posts on your 358WSSM and will get one built someday.
Flatter than the Max in a Handi? I wouldn't try. 1:14" twist is working for me with 180gr Hornady to 225gr SGK. I haven't tried the long 225gr like Accubond or Barnes. I'm gravitating toward the 200gr though... seems to be the sweet spot.
If I were having success like you I wouldn't change a thing.
Reaching back in time I remember shooting 357 Auto Mags with 158 grain soft points at around 2K fps. Don't do that any more as the pistols are too expensive to repair if they break but 30 years ago this was less of a problem. I wrote to IMI several times back in teh 80s about the possibility of them chambering a DE in 357 AM as I thought this platform would be a winner.
