Well he apparently actually hit one of the bad guys and the other two may or may not have been hit but ran away.

This in Mayor Daley's city where honest people are forbidden from defending themselves with a handgun because of a handgun ban that has been in place for over 20 years. The radio announced today that the police have not indicated if charges would be pressed against the store owner for saving his own life from the armed thugs.

For the record, this is the 3rd time in 3 weeks that handguns were used in self defense in Chicago ~ illegally!

Chicago pawn shop owner shoots robber in self defense

The owner of a pawn shop on Chicago's Northwest side reportedly used his gun in self defense against three robbers.

Police say that that three robbers entered the pawn shop, located on the 5900 block of West Fullerton Avenue, just before 1 PM. After being placed in fear for life by the robbers, the pawn shop owner is said to have fired in self defense, striking one of the robbers and sending his accomplices fleeing. A dead suspect was found near the crime scene, and police are seeking the two other suspects, according to news reports. No injuries to the pawn shop owner or any bystanders were reported.

This is the third self defense shooting to occur in Chicago during the last couple of weeks. In the first self defense shooting, an 80 year old Chicago homeowner used his handgun to stop a convicted felon who broke in during the ealy morning hours. In the second self defense shooting, another Chicago homeowner used his handgun to stop a fugitive who dove through his front window while running from the police.

Sadly, gun control advocates ignore the self defense value of firearms and believe that infringing the right of law abiding citizens to own a gun for self defense will somehow prevent criminals from having a gun and using it to commit a crime. The fact is that criminals ignore the laws that tell them not to have a gun, just as readily as they ignore the rest of society’s laws. The result is that criminals remained armed, and are able to prey upon their defenseless victims with impunity. Adding insult to injury, gun bans lead to situations where those citizens who fire in self defense end up prosecuted for saving their own lives. Hopefully, the soon to be decided McDonald v. Chicago case will put an end to Chicago’s handgun ban and the injustice that goes along with it, allowing more Chicago residents to defend themselves against violent criminals.

What's one of the ways to prove a law is useless?

    Mass disobedience.

    Sadly, Daley will never care.

it is sad that he will never care, because as the mayor it is his responsibility to do what his citizens want, and after three home invasion shootings in a month, it is clear that they all feel the need to protect themselves and want to be able to do so legally

Fortunately for the first, and sadly for the second, both are quite true.

The only way revolutions ever succeed is when a critical mass of active, like-minded participants is reached to affect a change. I sincerely hope signs like this and the Brainless Bunch's recent fundraising success are indications that we have reached that point.

It sounds like the folks of Chicago have reached their "mad as hell, and not gonna take it anymore" point, where the fear of losing their life to the FELLOW criminals that Richard Daley (hereafter, 'The Dick' :D) and his ilk continue to coddle, is greater than their fear of being persecuted/prosecuted by his regime for engaging in civil disobedience against this unjust law.

While I of course prefer that NO violent crime against the innocent ever occurs, when (not 'if') it does, it would please me to see an increasing number of Chicago victims winning and criminals losing thanks to more good guys deciding to disobey the handgun ban.

Perhaps thanks to the free flow of ideas and information enabled by the internet, more people are becoming aware of ideas like civil disobedience, 'natural' law (i.e. unjust "laws" are automatically invalid, and thus not law), the human right to self defense, etc., and are warming to the idea that just because a few elected ( :soapbox: :rules: )-heads pass a law that infringes upon RIGHTS, doesn't mean we have to obey it. It sounds like Chi-town may be whippin' out some Henry David Thoreau action on The Dick, and quietly telling him to take his handgun ban and shove it up his bloated, corrupt, mentally unstable backside.

Can you give references for that? I saw where one was grandfathered in and the second was a retired LEO who is legal with a handgun. Perhaps you refer to others?

    Did you read the article?

It specifically talks about 2 priors, neither of which were a retired cop or a legal gun.

The retired cop story was all over the media. I have heard nothing about the "grandfathered" gun to which you refer but one of the shootings was by a grandfather who purchased a gun only a month prior to shooting a criminal in his home after being shot at by said thug. That gun was clearly in violation of the law.

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6, but even better to live in a free land where ones right to life trumps one mans power hungry control schemes.

And that seems to be the message from the Chicago media, which has begun recently to openly question Mayor Daley about the effectiveness of his gun ban. These recent self-defense shootings have been all over the normally anti-gun Chicago media and the radio talk shows (especially WLS 890AM) have been one sided rants against Daley's gun ban and in favor of gun rights.

All steps in the right direction. I'm betting that city will breathe a collective sigh of relief once he's out of office. One good thing is that nothing seems to have come from his plea to the UN for interference and meddling in whats none of their gosh darned business.

OK, I was confusing different stories. Sorry.

Sounds like the media is picking up on this, siding with the peoples rights. That is a good thing.

is daley still sending in the national guard b/c obviously all he has to do is let the general public carry. and not just in their homes, i mean carry.

Actually, yes, the guard is being sent there. For a disaster drill, or at least that's what it's called. I'd say they could drop the drill part, Chicago is just that bad.

Mock disaster drill planned for Chicago area

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. | A massive emergency response exercise is scheduled for the Chicago area.
The Illinois National Guard says more than 50 local, state, federal and private agencies will participate in the drill to learn how to respond to disasters. The five-day training exercise will run from Sunday through Thursday, June 17.
Officials with the Illinois National Guard say the event is a "full-scale exercise" and residents can expect to see emergency responders throughout the Chicago area "look and acting" as if it were a real disaster mission.
Officials say the practice events will include a simulated commercial airplane crash, simulated rail car evacuation and simulated terrorist attack.
Road closures and detours are possible in the Chicago area.
