I think I've seen that a few of our newer members are also new to the gun world.
We have a sticky for gun safety at the top of the general firearms section.
Thought I'd make this thread though, in case it isn't seen.

There are 4 gun safety rules.
Yes, people debate if there are 3, 4, or 5, or if they are necessary.
    Here are some resources.

Note: the cornered cat has some good resources for women with guns, or maybe guys with women that have guns.

All gun safety rules are important, but there is one in particular that I stress in every class.
Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction at ALL times.

There is usually a little bit of discussion here. They always ask "what is a safe direction..." to which I reply , "it could be different in every situation."

The point I try to stress is this.
No matter what else may fail, mechanical safeties, mental blocks...
if the muzzle is always pointed in a safe direction, no one gets hurt, EVER!

It cannot be stressed enough in my opinion.

First off thank you for posting this. It is a importance on two levels. One being to educate those that don't know. The second to remind those that all ready know and take there experience for granted resulting in lack of attention to necessity. Remember in the court of law there is no accident only negligence. Meaning not practicing these simple rules results in negligence not an accident.

Currently going to school to be an EMT, with goal of EMT-T/SWAT medic, and already seeing how negligence can ruin someones life. Most of these instances are non-life-threatening but the most benign of GSWs (if there is such a thing) means years of PT. Best case.

Be safe! And teach new shooters properly!

Also - EVERY range bag should have med stuff in it. In my opinion... Please please please, at least pick up a TQ and some gauze to throw in with your shooting stuff!

A "safe direction" would definitely include... not at another shooter. Loaded or not, please watch your muzzle.
