That is excellent. I love my 29-2! Some nice 240gr round moving out ~1300 fps...you can feel the energy for sure!

I've yet to see studies which come anywhere near being inclusive enough to draw meaningful conclusions. There are far too many variables in real world situations to declare any handgun caliber superior to another. The "data" available when .38 & .357 were the predominant calibers in LE is far from complete.

Shot placement is everything with any handgun caliber. Rifles are superior all the way around.

I have shot minimum 20 deer with a 44 mag and 3 with high powered rifle. I am no expert, and can't even remember staying at a Holiday Inn Express, but I prefer the devastation and ability to drop an animal quickly of a 44 mag vs a high power rifle. That is 50 yards or less. I have no idea how that translates to human targets, but I am a huge fan of the 44 mag. I never carry it for self defense for 2 reasons. The revolvers are too big and heavy, and I would hate to kill someone behind the person I was shooting.

I have no doubt about the usefulness of the 44 mag as a hunting cartridge, it is easily capable of killing large mammals. The difference is that hunting and defensive handgun use have very little in common and there is a price to be paid when trying to hit a moving target with a handgun under the type of stress a life threatening situation brings. No amount of energy or bullet diameter in a handgun cartridge will make up for the inevitably large percentage of less than ideal hits which come with defensive pistol use.

This is true. Even in the case of man v. dangerous game, a lot of people who know the business in Alaska are swapping out their .44 magnums for 10mm pistols loaded with hard cast bullets. As long as the bullet will smack hard and penetrate sufficiently, I'll take 16 rounds over 6 any day of the week when the target is moving fast and trying to have me for dinner.
