Has anyone ever shot 44 Russian out of their 44mag/special? I was thinking about buying some 44 Russian brass. I can get similar velocities to the 44 special with less than 2/3's the powder. Also pretty sure I can crank my dies down short enough to load it. Any thoughts?

If you cast then a design with long barrel contact area and seated deep can work in .44 Spl.

Missed this post somehow. FortuneCookie45LC is the man when it comes to this. Tons of videos with lots of good information. I've watched his stuff for years.

I have read the cowboy shooters use 44 Russian all the time in their 44mag/specials. They compare the recoil to shooting 38 specials. As far as reloading, after more research and measurements, it appears my crimp die is going to be the weak link. I will run out of threads before I can crank it low enough. RCBS crimp dies for 44 Russian are sold out at Midway with no back order, but I did find one at Brownell's that should work.

He tried shooting 44 Russian out of his 44 mag lever guns. Shoots fine. Feeds very badly due to being too short.

Reducing the volume of the powder space by deep seating a bullet is the easy path forward.

I just came from Lee's website. For $22 I can buy a crimp die that works for 44 Russian, 44 Special and 44 magnum. I looked again at my crimp die. It is for 44 Special, 44 magnum and 44 Super magnum. So my current crimp die would be a tad too short. Someone on gunbroker has the Lee die for $18.95. Problem solved. Thanks for all the input.
