While at a stop at Gander Mountain I noticed that a 45-70 does not neck down, would this make it legal to hunt with in Indiana?

If so, is it worth it or should I just stick to a lever action .44?

That makes sense. Thanks for the info, I was just curious! I thought that it may make a good deer gun, but there goes that idea..

research it some more. I believe this is the case but regs are always changing. The DNR might have changed something since I last was informed.

Alright, will do! Thanks for giving me an idea. :ingo:

Do you have any personal experience with the round? Good or bad?

    Wish it was......great cartridge.

That's good to hear, I think that it may be just to much gun though..
Does it kick like a mule?

I have no personal experience with the 45-70. My nieghbor shoots the round. He reloads in black powder. Competes in shoots down in Friendship at the muzzle loader shoots.

Alright, seems like its a way outdated round!

Just because its old doesn't mean its outdated. Look a the 30-06. Its been around for over 100 years. It's still very popular and its very relavent. I've often thought of getting a 45-70 for fun, but other guns keep getting in the way, waiting for a check so I can get a 1911 right now.

My father has a 45-70 Springfield Model 1873 trapdoor which is a ton of fun to shoot and doesnt kick as much as a 12ga. He also has an .50-70 Springfield Model 1866 which kicks a little more but still not as bad as a 12ga in my opinion. They are both incredibly accurate considering how old they are. We do not have any problem hitting 8inch steel plates at 180yds. We would shoot the .50-70 more but the brass is almost impossible to find, which doesnt bother me cause both the 1873 and 1866 are a pain to clean.

I realize that, but it seems now a days people lean towards AR's and such. But I do realize that AR's are in an opposite category.
The fact that they have been here so long and can compete with the ballistics in newer rounds, proves its a great round!

Yeah those trap doors are awesome rifles! That kinda shocks me that its not as much as a 12ga. But the trap door probably weighs something significant, as opposed to a lever action Marlin.

The .45-70 that you usually find on the shelf (Hornady, Winchester) doesn't kick anywhere near what the Buffalo Bore does (I've never fired any Garrett). Doesn't cost anywhere as much either. It's not a long range cartridge by any (modern) measure, but it's hella fun!

The 45-70 is not legal to hunt with because it is not a handgun round. i have a Springfield Trapdoor and 200 rounds of black powder substitute rounds that I have yet to shoot.

Well I was kinda assuming that since you are still capable of typing you had not shot that Garrett ammo! Thats just CRAZY! 500 grains moving at 1500 fps, the concussion must be outrageous!

I was assuming it might have been legal because it didnt neck down, but i guess that doesnt apply for everything.:dunno:
