I got a packet of 480 grain dgx's the other day for punching craters in things but I'm strugling to find any data for it. What I really need is a seating depth or over all length can anyone help?

    thanks

i looked around on 458socomforums and didn't see anything for that particular bullet.

I can give you the info i have from the site though. It has some 500 grain loads.

Yeah that would be great gunselman, my main concern is seating depth the will more that like be subsonic so the powder will be low, 20g of lil gun or so
    so

    thanks

Lucas I can shed some insight into what you're trying to accomplish, well Quickload can at any rate. If you reduce the COL from max spec of 2.230 to a COL of 2.220 using that 480DGX bullet that leaves you with 33.556 grains of useable case capacity. The bullet itself occupies 28.044 grains of capacity at that seated length.

We can plug in any number for COL that fits your chamber and get back load numbers for that particular bullet and powder combo, and it will show pressure and speed as well.

Can you make up a dummy round seated off the lands and grooves in your rifle with that 480DGX and get me the COL? We can use any barrel length you have as well.

For an example here's the numbers for that load and Lil gun from a 20" barrel.

    Cartridge : .458 Socom
    Bullet : .458, 480, Hornady DGX 45032
    Useable Case Capaci: 33.556 grain H2O = 2.179 cm³
    Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 2.220 inch = 56.39 mm
    Barrel Length : 20.0 inch = 508.0 mm
    Powder : Hodgdon Lil'Gun

Just a heads up guys, quick load is known to have problems accurately predicting 458 socom loads. Also, it is very easy to go over pressure with the 458, if you are getting any primer flattening, you are over.

Good luck, and let us know what you come up with, :yesway:

What version of the software do you own and use that gave numbers way out of line and what specific load parameters were you working up that had large errors in results when you loaded and tested them? ~That would be useful information to know.

I never said I owned any QL software. I simply shared what I've read, from people that have experienced QL predicting to high of a max charge with 458 socom.

Hopefully data will get better, and more abundant, if the socom is adopted by SAMMI this year!

No, you never mentioned actually owning it. It was my assumption that no one would just arbitrarily throw that out there without some hands on results or anything else that had a shred of real substance to identify load specifications that were tested and found to be erroneous causing issues in working up a safe load using the software predictions.

I've generated 1,007 load prediction files to date for the 458 Socom using the software and 382 of them have been physically tested for a total deviation spread of less than 5% of predicted speed. One case with less capacity, a single bullet longer than the rest etc. will cause deviations from the predictions.

But you read somewhere that QL predicts to high of a max charge and that makes it relevant and worth sharing for the purposes of working up a safe load to get to there in the first place? Fair enough, or is there some credible information you have that would be relevant to helping what OP was trying to accomplish here?

Right I made a dummy and I've set it a 2.220" which is on the pointy side of the crimp ring lol, I use a suppressor is there a factor in ql for that?

    Bullet : .458, 480, Hornady DGX
    Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 2.220 inch
    Barrel Length : 16"
    Powder : Hodgdon Lil'Gun

let me know if I've missed anything

    thanks Lucas

Lucas I ran a new spreadsheet for you and sent it in a PM with some options for tailoring the data input to match your specific chamber ream dimensions. Have fun with it and welcome to the forum, LMK if you need any more help.

No problem, check your Pm's in a few minutes I'll have it run a spreadsheet for you and sent it along. The new 3.8 version release is amazing, Hartmut Broemel really put some serious effort into the last few years of compiling all the extra data and propellant / bullet file updates.

Thanks trophy. A lot of interesting things in there.

is this the one I want? QuickLOAD - QuickTARGET ver. 3.8 | QuickLOAD

    Thanks mate

    lucas

That's it, what you're essentially buying is a licensed serialized copy of the QL software that also includes Quick Target on the same cd. It's a one time load and use program with ownership rights on your licensed copy to install on any PC(s) you own. There is registration paperwork included when you receive it and you want to be sure and fill that out and send it back to them.

For future update releases they will accept the return of your current registered CD and exchange it for a small fee for the newest version.

I've read some of your posts about helping people with some load data...I was just wondering if you wouldn't mind helping me out? I'm new to reloading but have a guy that has experience helping me. I loaded with the 325 hornady c.o.a.l of 2.14 and 32.5gr of lilgun, going off a sheet that Marty had worked up for that bullet. Needless to say it was way hot! Causing imprinting and primer flattening..mm this coming after damaging my rifle with defective Corbon 300 jhp....so you can imagine I'm very cautious. I reloaded with same c.o.a.l and bullet making 4 different loads 5 each to see how the pressures and groupings are. 28,28.5,29,29.5.....what're your thought? I really appreciate your help in advance. Jason
