Actually, I think .308 is a .308 diameter bullet, and 7.62 is .311 diameter bullet.Nope, bullet size is, I think, the same but the shell casings are different.
It cannot be emphasized enough --> 7.62x39 is not the same as .308 (similar to 7.62x51 aka 7.62 Nato).
Trying to interchange could result in serious injury, death, and a blown up gun.

Not to thread jack, but I found a plastic bag in one of my ammo bags the other day from, I'm guessing early 90's, 7.62x39, 100 rnds, $8.00!!sorry guy, no can do. the sks is 7.62x39 and your .308 is 7.62x51. as stated by others, you could seriously injure yourself by tying! after the gun show this weekend and looking at ammo prices, you might be ALOT better off sticking to the 7.62x39 anyways. i picked up hollow-point for $140 per 500 and ball for $220 per 1000. the .308 was double that and no hollow points.
