COLUMBIA - Walter F. Hershberger, Major, Ordnance Corps, U.S. Army (Ret.), completed his tour of duty in this life on 5 June 2012. Born and raised in Crawfordsville, Indiana, Walt was the son of the late Louis M. and Catherine Coahran Hershberger.

He attended Indiana University and Western Kentucky University before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1968. Trained as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialist, he served in Vietnam as an Sp5 assigned to 25th Ordnance Detachment (ED), 1970-71. In 1974, he earned his Bachelor's degree at Eastern Kentucky University and was commissioned through Army ROTC. Returning to active duty, Walt served in 4th Missile Command in Korea, 2d COSCOM in Germany and various TRADOC training units. He served as Chief of Ground Ordnance while stationed at the joint service EOD school at Indian Head, Maryland. Walt deployed to Southwest Asia in 1990 with 3d Armored Division, in which he served as Division Ammunition Officer during Operation Desert Storm. His awards and decorations included the Senior EOD Badge, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (OLC), Army Commendation Medal (2d OLC) and Army Achievement Medal.

After retiring from the Army in 1992, Walt worked for a police supply company in Illinois before moving to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he was employed by Bradis, Inc., as a small arms specialist. He greatly enjoyed the work and friendship he shared for eleven years with his Bradis colleagues. In retirement, Walt's hobbies included military history and target shooting. He was a superb marksman.

Walt is survived by his brothers, Fred Hershberger (LTC, MI) of Fredericksburg, Va. and Mark (formerly CPT, AGC) in Columbia and Mark's family. Walt is remembered as a good friend, faithful son and brother, loyal employee and a good soldier.

A private memorial observance will be arranged at a later date. Those wishing to make memorial contributions may consider cancer related research organizations and veterans organizations, such as Disabled American Veterans.

Walt will certainly be missed by all. He was a warehouse of knowledge about firearms and never rushed a sale. He would take the time to make sure you got what you wanted. My wife, Angie Oakley, has only worked with Walt for a few months but quickly realized what a gentleman he was. She always enjoyed working with Walt. Angie learned a lot about firearms from one of the best. Walt, rest in peace, we will all miss you.

    A True Gentelman!

We at Bradis Guns ask INGO to join us in mourning the loss of our good friend and longtime employee, Walt Hershberger, who passed away last night after a prolonged battle with cancer.

We will remember Walt most for his dry and self-deprecating sense of humor, as well as for his vast product knowledge and his loyalty to the company over his many years of employment with us.

He will be sorely missed, and we are all diminished by his passing.

Please keep Walt's brothers and the entire Bradis team in your thoughts and prayers.

    Thank you.

Walt, you will be missed by many, especially your family here at Bradis.
You have touched so many lives....
I will always remember you as "The True Gentleman of Bradis" A nick name that not only I gave you, but many other people as well. It was an honor working with you.
