Can anyone recommend a shotgun with the following configurations:

    1. 18" or 18.5" barrel
    2. wood stock and fore-end (wood is so much nicer than synthetic!)
    3. magazine extension
    4. (here's the kicker) reliable and affordable

I haven't seen any straight-from-the-factory shotgun like this. Does this mean you'd pretty much have to buy one of the shotguns with many aftermarket parts and try to piece together what you want? If so, what combinations would you consider?

    Thanks!

You're looking for a Remington 870 Police, part number 24899.

18" IC barrel, bead sight, 2-shot mag extension, parkerized finish, wood stock & forearm.

Alternatively, you could buy the much more affordable 870 Express 7-round, part number 25077, and refit it with wood furniture bought on the cheap from Ebay or elsewhere.

I can't think of any "tacticool" shotguns that don't come with black stocks. Your best/cheapest bet would be to get a Remington 870 and cut the barrel down to whatever size you want if you're just going for the wood stock. I've seen used 870's go for less than 100 bucks.

I looked at 24899, and it has a 4+1 capacity. Is it possible to install a magazine extension? I hear that's a pain to do on Remington 870 Express models...

The price I found online for the Police is $613.94 (ouch). The 870 Express seems more reasonable. Any recommendations for wood furniture that feels nice in your hands?

Look in the mossbetg line up. That have added many models into their tactical line up but your need for wood will result in set backs as the world of tacticool depends on the use of plastic.

Interesting. It shows on Remington's LE website as the +2 extension model.

Yes; the 870Ps should lack the mag tube dimples that prevent the extension from being installed.

If you've gotta have wood, it's all about the same. New take-off 870 wood stocks and forearms can be had on Ebay for as little as $20/set.

I have an 870 with a wood stock that has a slug barrel. It is a magnum so I can use either 2 3/4 or 3 inch loads. I have seen similar ones to mine at gun shows for around $250.

Thanks for the link, shooter521. I assume us civilians can buy the law enforcement models, too? I checked the site and didn't find anything to the contrary.

Yep! As long as you can pass the background check, you can get an 870P.

I still kick myself that I wasn't able to buy the 870P that I saw for $240 a few years ago. Alas, I was in a work vehicle. I can't have firearms in 'em.

In 2004 Winchester made a Model 1300 Defender called a "Camp Defender" which had a 20" barrel and 8 shot mag with wood stocks. Not sure how hard it would be to find but I am a huge fan of the 1300 over the 870 or 500.

here is a link to the details on the Win site: Model 1300, Camp Defender, -- Winchester Repeating Arms -- Historic Product Model

I will agree here, I have recently became a big fan of Winchester shotguns. They really are a great choice that a lot of people forget about!

I recommend a IAC 97t. It's a copy of the Winchester 1897 trench gun, and mine has functioned perfectly in almost 1000 rounds. An added plus is you can slam fire it, by holding the trigger down and pumping the action it fires the round as soon as it is chambered. The 16" bayonet doesn't hurt either.
