Yeah, ACA was always a step towards total single payer. I really have a problem with those who seek to destroy our country. I'm sure the next socialist who ends up in the White House will continue the destruction.

Add another layer of buearocrats (bureaucrats DANG IT. I ALWAYS misspell that)

Yup sure... THAT will make it cheaper..

Let's not maybe find a way to get more doctors and nurses.
    Reduce bureaucracy
    Or anything like that.

And let's not forget the morons that have a doctor's appointment, and call the ambulance.

    Or "CAN'T" afford insurance.
Yet have no problem shelling out $$ for entertainment.

Close... know someone who is Medicare/Medicaid cost share protected (zero out of pocket). Regular ER visits and ambulance calls when not needed... just because they can, and it's free (to them).

Pretty sure my neighbor was the same (though just speculating)... ambulance next door at least once a month.

No idea why health costs are so high, though. :):

Regarding the cost, I'll share a small window into my expenses for health insurance premiums over a few years.

In 2013, the last year I was with Pekin Insurance, a private carrier, I paid $268.83 / month. This was with 80/20 to $5k and a $5k deductible.

In 2014, on the ACA exchange from here on, my premium went down to $196.65 / month out of pocket. Now understand, I NEVER took the full amount of the subsidy up front, so at the end of the year I got back several hundred dollars more on my taxes. So the premium, with subsidy, is actually lower than the $196.65. This was the bronze plan with about a $6,500 total annual out of pocket expense. So I was on the hook for about $500 more than through Pekin, an insignificant amount in my book over the year.

In 2015 my premium went up to $245.01. While this is also with the partial subsidy, after two (2) years I am still saving more than $20 / month not including the end of year full reimbursement of the subsidy.

In 2016 my out of pocket premium finally exceeded my Pekin Insurance bill by going to $294.02. But yet again I didn't take the whole subsidy so at the end of the year my actual premium was lower.

This coverage is just for me, a single male nonsmoker.

The reason I never took the full subsidy during the year was on the advice of my accountant, who explained that if my income changed significantly I could wind up owing a lot of money. Ergo, it was safer to pay more during the year and risk getting dinged slightly at the end instead of taking the whole enchilada during the year and risking a major bill.

I hope this helps explain things.

    Regards,

    Doug

PS - Since 2017 I've had insurance provided through work so no more exchange.

Some additional numbers to chew on.

Where I work they pay a percentage of my health insurance premium. Currently I pay, per paycheck, $59.42 for health insurance. I just received next years share and per paycheck I will pay $65.51. That is a whopping $6.09 per paycheck. Whoopie. Big deal. Right?

Except, consider the percentage increase! It is an increase of 10.25%. When I googled the inflation rate for 2018 it is estimated at 1.9%. So my health insurance premium increase is 500% that of standard inflation, or simply five (5) times higher.

The high cost of health care is born by health insurance companies. We are back to an unsustainable increase in cost that someday will tear our country down, probably sooner than we think.

    Regards,

    Doug

Yes, healthcare cost increases far exceed both inflation and wage growth, and have for quite some time:
