Too many pills being passed out by doctors who are influenced to push pills. And they admit its not an exact science and there's a lot of trial and error involved.

Mental health, encourage strong nuclear families, opportunities (rather than handouts), stigmatize drug and alcohol abuse (since criminalizing it has failed miserably), bring back the trades.

I didn't say that it would be easy. You're absolutely right, they would be committed, some wrongfully so. Most if not all of these shooters give warning signs of some sort. Take away the self medicating part and force medicating may be a way to avoid institutions.

The big question is how do we start addressing mental health?

It would take a multi-fold approach to come anywhere near a solution, even then it would be imperfect. Eldirector hit on a couple valid points, strong families and stigmatizing drug abuse would be absolutely key.

I agree armed guards are needed. 100% agree. But the obstacle is costs associated with hiring officers and lets be honest most schools need at least 3-4 officers. More on more open campuses with multiple buildings
