It's a sad day when good cops are harassed, arrested and have their careers destroyed for doing the right thing. This is a major reason why the public has an increasingly jaundiced view of them. Standing by a buddy is the right thing to do, but when they commit crimes you must step away and do the right thing. As it is there is no incentive for them to do, the repercussions are just too great for too many of them. From top to bottom, there's a no snitching code that serves no-one well. It's something that must be rooted out and destroyed if cops are to gain or keep the public's trust. I am reminded of one of my favourite cops, John Perry, who made a career of getting rid of bad cops. He died on 9/11 and we're poorer for his loss.
