Amid cuts_ Ohio judge tells citizens to carry guns | The Journal Gazette, Fort Wayne, Ind.

JEFFERSON, Ohio – A judge in Ohio is urging citizens to be vigilant and carry firearms because of budget cuts to the county sheriff’s department.

Ashtabula County Common Pleas Judge Alfred Mackey told Cleveland’s WKYC-TV that the cuts mean members of the public should arm themselves and watch out for their neighbors.

The northeast Ohio county is the state’s largest in area and is mostly rural. With deputies assigned to transport prisoners and serve warrants, one radio car is assigned to patrol 720 square miles.

Sheriff William Johnson has threatened to sue the county commissioners to have some of his department’s funding restored.

i love it when judges tell it like it is. does it take a complete absence of police presence to make some folks think maybe they should watch out for themselves a little?

Even then, a large percentage of people would still hold false hope that SOMEBODY will come and save them. Thats the mentality that has been drilled into folks for quite awhile now, unfortunately.

Nothing ever happens in Ashtabula, there is one run down section full that is awful dark at all times of the day, but iirc it's in the city of Ashtabula (in Ashtabula county) and they have their own PD.

    but props to the Judge.
