Hey Prescut I agree with you. I based my comment on a rough estimate of a 20 year lifespan on my Glock 22C.
Say I paid approx $480 for the Glock, and that I average every other month a trip to the range and burn through a 50 round box of target ammo at $20 per box, and a 25 round box of good self defense ammo at $20 per box. After 20years I'm at a respectable 9,000 rounds and $4,800...approx 10x the price of the Glock.

There are some competitive shooters that fire a thousand rounds plus a week. I fire roughly eight hundred a month shooting matches. So, milage will vary.

After reading this thread and realizing how little I've been shooting lately, I got to the range this morning and ran 200 rounds through 2 Glocks and 2 1911s. I ran 25 through a Glock 27, 75 through my G23 and 50 each through a Sig full size 1911 and another 50 through an Ed Brown. The Glock 27 rewarded me with 2 failures to feed, but the G23 was perfect. Both 1911s were perfect as well, and I was definitely more accurate with the 1911s than I was with the 23. Love the 23 though, but the 1911s earned their way back into the holster this month.

I highly highly doubt the average gun owner shoots an average of 100 rounds per month.

But we are not average (are we?)

Just seeing this thread now. I have to agree, many gun owners take their guns out 2-3 times a year, and blast 50-100 rounds each trip. Most of my friends and family that own guns fit this description perfectly. It's something that we do when the family gets together, so it's not a "problem" to spend the money on ammo when seen as an outing/adventure. Otherwise, these same people keep about 1 magazine full of ammo in the house and call it good.
I think this description probably fits well over 50% of all gun owners as a whole.

... and yes, we INGOers are special
