    The headline is misleading.
I have no problem with what the officer did either.

Clarification: The headline from the paper is misleading.

if they were someone's dogs, they should of had them in their yard. If they were "neighborhood dogs" why are the neighbors upset?

First of all lets address this picture they are using with their article.

    These are Mastiff puppies. This.

Not this. All dogs are not ravenous pitbulls out of Michael Vick's basement.

YouTube has a great video of a Rottie getting tazed after he charged an officer (who was justified in shooting but his fellow officer was quick thinking). OC Spray is also effective, but a lot of dogs, especially bull breeds, have extremely high pain tolerance.

The pic of the dogs that appear in this thread add nothing. When you are talking about a 75 pound dog that is aggressive, who gives a crap how cute it is? Polar bears look pretty cute when 8 inches of safety glass separates them from me. That being said, showing a stock photograph of an aggressive dog (see: pit bull), is not great journalism.

I've tasered one dog and it did the job. I wouldn't use that or OC as an option for a charging canine, though.

Hot damn, it only took 10 posts for the insults to start flying. :n00b:

I will agree that if dogs are TRULY fighting, then they need to be put down before they hurt someone. Common sense.
 How dare you interject common sense into an emotional discussion!!
Especially if it even remotely justifies the actions of the Jack Booted Cops.
    SHAME on you!!!

The owner of these dogs has made some comments to the story now. She says the dogs broke a leather collar in half and there was a log chain on the female dog when she was shot.

I hope she is exaggerating that she had a log chain holding these dogs in. If not she should be charged with animal cruelty.

Common sense is apparently in the eye of the beholder

I think you guys need to re-read the comments and figure out what the real story is here. In my opinion the story is summed up by the Dog owner below.

#4 Angie Waldon 2011-01-11 00:41 Why were these pups shot at the edge of their yard and the stray that runs lose was not? Does this make sense?
Basically without all the "posturing" about dog sizes/age, a 75 and a 100 pound dog broke free from the logging chain/leather collar tie out they were attached to and attacked a smaller stray dog that had been digging through the familys trash and generally harassing the tethered dogs just out of reach.

IMO smaller dog (or irresponsible owner) is responsible for getting the 2 bigger dogs killed. Typical for today's society.

And for all those saying it's common sense to put down a dog that fights another dog... I hope you don't have a dog that you expect to protect your family..... I hope to God whatever dog I have as my son gets older(My current dog is over 10 years old) protects my son from strays and I'd be one pissed off citizen filing complaint and suit against a policeman putting my dogs down if they were defending my property where my son plays from a stray dog.

Apparently common sense isn't all that common, especially for those purporting to be using it.

Although... I wonder if common sense really depends on whom you consider to be "common"..... if socialists are the "common" ground then perhaps it is "Common sense" to put down a dog for defending it's home from strays. Similar to how the socialists want to put down our gun rights. According to them, it's "Common sense" to only allow police and military access to guns.

Out in the country where I grew up, common sense as it pertains to this situation would be to shoot the stray and give the 2 dogs defending my property a steak dinner.

I guess I don't understand what happened after trying to match the article with the comments.
The dogs were in their yard, a stray comes along, they scuffle, the dogs that belong there got shot on (near? Inside?) their property line, and the stray was left alone?
