Cut my teeth varmit hunting with a .222. It seems like these days that this caliber is pretty much obsolete. Rifles chambered in .222 are getting harder to find, but they are out there. In my experience, have found the .222 to be good out to 200 yds and quite a bit quieter than the 22-250.

I've got a Savage bolt action with a 4 round mag. Weaver K-1 6 power scope.
One of the best little guns I own. Just bought some ammo for it the other day with the intentions of letting my grandson use it when we hunt coyotes.
I'm tired of him taking my .308!!
Wouldn't think of getting rid of it.

    I love the .222 I have a savage 24 -v 222 over 20. I have a savage 340 in 222 I have a rem 700 that shoot nickel size 100 yard groups and a 10 and 14 inch contender barrels.

The very first round of it kind. A benchrest shooter dream. I think there good for 222 yards. I have been trying to buy a sako in .222 rem mag for a while but have not been successful in finding one.

I have been hooked for a long time and that round is the reason I started to reload.

I currently have a remington 700 in .222 and have been looking for another. Years back, I had a Winchester Mod 70 per 1964 in .222 and loved it. One of my biggest mistakes was selling that gun.

So, what is your favorite load for .222? Mine would be 20.5 of IMR 4198 with a 55 grain jacketed hollowpoint.

My father has a Sako Rihimaki (spelling) in 222 that he bought used when he was about 16. I don't know how many ground hogs he has taken with it, but i know it's a bunch. It shoots great. I've taken a couple of yotes with it, and a couple crazy long shots on ground hogs. I love that rifle's report, really cool "crack" to it. The only downside to it I have with that gun is being too afraid to get it scratched up while I am out.
Don't see too many 222's on the shelves these days. Gander Mtn. had a nice A-bolt hunter with a camo syn. stock in 222 last year. Wishing I would have picked it up. :xmad:

My fav load depends on the gun. -The rem 700 like light bullets best so the 40 grain sp and h322 at 25 grains. The tnt hp shoot less tight but I got them up to 26 grains of h322 and when it hits the groundhog there is a nice red mist out the back end. The rem 700 shoots the winchester supreme 40 grain best but it is a factory load and I just have 4 left.

The old savage will shoot anything I feed it well. The handguns I just normally feed the 40 grain load. I really want to try out some lil gun powder. in the hornet it is magic pixie dust and it should work well in 222 and 44 mag.

I've got a HB Shilen BBl 21inch for my Contender Carbine made by SSK with a leu 3x9 a real shooter, you can shoot it without loosing your hearing for 20 minute on every shot, it doesn't scare someone in the next county like the 22-250 and with a 50 gr SX with some H322 it does the job and makes internals externals

I have a Rem 700 Classic in 222, it was the first gun for prarie dogs, shoots better than 1.5" at 200 if you keep the barrel on the cool side, walks vertical bad when it's hot.

It's been parked so long, I'm trading it next week, but still have almost 1K of moly coated ammo loaded up, may put it up for sale after the rifle is gone.

I fully agree with you as to being more accurate than the 223. As for the obsolete, I have been looking for a second .222 for a while now and they seem to be few and far between.

    whats the difference .222 v .223 besides 001?

they acutally can shoot the exact same bullet. the 222 is a original design meaning it was not derived from any other bullet. the 204 ruger is a necked down 222 casing i believe.

the comparison between 223 and 222 really stops at bullet size. i believe the 222 was designed first but im not certain

The 222 is probably getting close to 80years old, it was designed as a varmint and target round, the 222 will be about 500fps slower than a 223 up to 150 fps slower but the big differnce is the neck of the round, the 222 was designed with a long neck and you get good even neck tension and it is believed that it help greatly with accuracy Most 222's had 1/14 twist or 1/12 so with 50 and 52 gr bullets it really shines, Hornady makes a SX bullet specifically for the Velocity range of the 222 and it will completely disembowel a crow at 125 yds I don't have pictures but I still have the grin.

The reduced velocity and case capacity keep the muzzle report down and there were some rifle's built on a small action just designed for the smaller cases,

Due to the pressures cases last forever and with the long neck sizing just the neck is very easy.

I'ts like driving a Dodge Dart swinger with a hemi in it, you pull up to the punk in the camaro who thinks he can win anything and you just roll away from him because you control the shot instead of unleashing Hell
