I am a memeber of the Griffith Isaac Walton League. Correct. the rifle range is two bench rests....one at 25 and one at 50 yards. You must shoot from a rest position. They do have an excellent trap facility. Membership is $65 a year with a one time registration/key fee of like $25 or something. You also must volunteer for a total of 10 hours of service within the first year as a member. After that, all you have to do is pay your dues. They have three small lakes with boat access (trolling motor only) They also have a nice little archery range in the woods with a tree stand. I recently became a member and I have already brought up the fact that you can't practice self-defensive pistol wielding from a bench position. It is my goal to make this happen. They have the space, I think it is just a safety issue and someone taking charge. If a self-defense class or something of the like was to happen there, I am sure that they would make arrangements to use the trap range for such an event. I joined because I live literally 2 blocks away and it's a great place to hit up after work to plink a .22 or drown a worm. You do need to be a member to use the range. There is trap shooting open to the public on thursdays starting around 2pm untill 10pm....(yes, they have lights)...You must have a sponsor to join, which is pretty easy. I walked in there one day during a kids archery clinic, and started talking to an older gentleman that ended up sponsoring me. If anyone on INGO is interested in becoming a member or would like more information, I'd be glad to help. I would also be happy to sponsor any INGO members. This would basically entail going to one of the meetings, listening to minutes, and having a few beers. It's a pretty layed back place.
Hey groovatron are you still a member of the Griffith Izaak?
Yes
Did they ever re-do the rules for the range so you don't have to shoot sitting from the bench?
No, but it is still in my plans. To tell the truth, I haven't been very active in meetings this summer. I have been super busy and have only gone there to fish and shoot.
When you say (trolling motor only) does this mean no canoes on the lakes?
No, it means that any boat that is being used can only have electic motors. Unless your canoe has a gas motor, you are fine. Canoe's are actually ideal for those lakes. The back one is the best for fishing and only accesible via boat.
Have you camped there?
Nope.
They still doing the public skeey shot days? What does one need to go?
Yes. Thursdays. I believe it starts around early afternoon and gos all the way to 10pm.....(they have lights) All you need is a shotgun, ammo (can purchase there) and money.....(if I remember right, it's $4-5 a round, slightly less for members).
as far as shooting skeet, we use "target loads," so I'm guessing that's what you'd want.
Okay, I can't take it anymore. Sorry for resurrecting this thread, but Mr. Groovatron, how do I join? I live over in Dyer and just need a place relatively close by to go shoot, canoe, and take my daughter camping. Any thoughts?
Do they allow full auto there? I've heard full auto gunfire while working in Griffith a couple times and assumed it was coming from there.
Ok, Jediagh, you got me. I'll go read it now with my head in shame...
