So I recently moved to the Castleton area and will be needing an auto mechanic in the near future. Only problem is I don't know where a good place to go would be. I obviously don't want to go somewhere that is dishonest or will take advantage of me. Admittedly, I know very little about auto mechanics. I just never grew up around anyone who taught me anything auto related :( In fact, I grew up in a family that let all our vehicles go to :poop: and never did any routine maintenance. Now that I'm out on my own, I want to change this and take care of what I have.

So any INGOers know a good place around Castleton or Fishers? I'll also be in the market to buy a new (used, but new to me) vehicle soon, and want to be able to have someone give it a once over before I buy something. I wish I knew enough about cars myself, but I don't. Any help would be appreciated.

Send PaulF a PM. He is the ONLY guy I've dealt with over the past year and a half or so.

Thanks for the info, everyone! I'll definitely PM PaulF soon, Que.

My check engine light came on a few weeks ago and I've notice it's been driving rough and the engine seems to shake if I'm idling in park. I'll wait to see what it is and how much it will cost me before I decide if I need a new vehicle, but come August I'll be commuting to the south side of Indy everyday and need something reliable.

My dad has done years of work with Devonshire off of 71st and Binford.

The list of shops I won't go to anymore has a few more on it though.

i can tell you i work at the firestone in glendale (62nd and keystone) - i HATE techs who try and rip people off just to make money. the folks who deal with customers at my store arent dishonest. the shop i used to work at in NY had a HUGE following - and for good reason - we only had 3 bays, but still pulled 6 figures per month because we were THAT busy. i was brought into the auto repair world by them, and the standards and principles they had stuck with me - i dont put up with BS or crooks. if i thought they were, i would have left long ago.

that being said, i would also suggest befriending some savvy folks, and learning to do work yourself - even simple things can save you a good chunk of change, plus it makes you feel good knowing that you did X and Y with your own hands :)

I take my cars to Northeast Auto Service at 65th & Binford. Good prices, and they actually let me supply my own parts at no additional markup. Saved me quite a bit of money.

Well, I take my under warranty cars to the dealership, but my out of warranty work has gone to Automotive Specialists in Noblesville. They've always treated me well and the prices have been decent. Shoot, they didn't even charge me for anything when my 4-Runner died. Even helped me find a scrapper to take it.

It's not really Castleton, but the folks at Hill's Garage (east of 38th and Georgetown) have always taken care of me. It's a family run shop and they will shoot straight and treat you fairly.

I strongly recommend Confident Auto Repair (just west of 96th & Michigan). You will NOT get bad service, and you WILL get good honest work done there. I've been going there about ten years now, and no other mechanics will touch my truck as long as I have a choice about it.
