Oh yeah. You have high iron water. If it were me I would only use iron fighter salt (usually green bag) and change that filter monthly.

We have a lot of iron in our well water and I use regular (or Morton System Saver) salt, but I add about a quarter cup of Iron Out for each 40 lb. bag I add to the softener. Seems to work pretty well and it's cheaper than the iron fighter stuff.

I have a similar situation that seems to come and go. No whole house filter though.

Is it common to have that much iron after the softener?

It depends. (God, I sound like Kirk!) My softener usually gets all the rust out, but sometimes it gets past it a little. It's almost like one of my tanks is better than the other one.

Stand by, I'm sure there'll be more as we stroll towards winter lol.
Have you by chance looked at your heat tape or pipe wrapping? They might become important in about 90 days. Might want a milk crate heater handy. Woke up to frozen pipes one year and made plans not to let that occur a second time.

I haven't but it's all PEX and the crawl space is sealed up tight. I'm hoping that won't be an issue.

Any water pipes outside to worry about?

Where's the water heater, and do you have to worry about pipes to it freezing?

Is there a pool or spa to close down?

There are three no freeze hydrants, one outside and two in the barn. Heat pump, water softener, water heater well tank and breaker box are all in the cellar.
