    I did not know that.

The site was personally selected by Admiral Tirpitz, was built up first as a military harbor and then as a commercial colony with significant internal industry and as the collection point for the German-owned mines in China proper. The opportunity to scoop this up was the primary reason that Japan jumped into the war on the British/French/Russian side knowing that Von Spee's Far East Squadron had zero chance of staving off the Japanese navy--a fact also recognized by Von Spee who promptly departed, annihilated a British fleet off the west coast of South America, and then had the bum luck of deciding to raid the Falkland Islands just after the British force including two battlecruisers which were larger, faster, better armored, and had larger guns than his cruisers had arrived for the purpose of hunting him. The only German ship to escape the battle on the right side of the water was the Emden which would go on to be a legend as a commerce raider until finally hunted down and destroyed later in the war.

That was one of my "uncle's" favorite words, and yeah he had some kind of fixation like that. I always wondered about him. Some things are making more sense now.
