My HD shotgun is a 500 with ghost ring sights. Lighter than the 590, plastic trigger guard, but otherwise the same mechanism. 20" barrel, 7 round tube, weapon light.

I really like the Mossberg lifter design. Many other people don't seem to mind having to move the lifter out of the way when loading, but I love the Mossberg giving me a straight shot to load without the lifter in the way. However, the machining on the loading port was so sharp that I had to do some file work to stop lacerating my thumb.

The only true drawback for me is the top-mounted safety, which precludes use of a pistol grip stock. The ambi function is fast, and intuitive, you just can't use a pistol grip with it because you have to break your grip and move your hand up to the top of the gun to actuate it.

I think pretty highly of Mossberg shotguns and everyone I've spoken to who has one seems to agree. They've continued putting out a solid product at a reasonable price point while their major American competitor, the Remington 870, has become yet another QC cautionary tale.

No hands-on time with one myself, but the Benelli Supernova might be another good contender. It also has an unobtrusive lifter, and a nifty little magazine cutoff button.
