I'm in the market for another 22 but I also would like to get something I can build on.

Does anyone make a AR in 22lr that I could swap 556 upper on? That way I can save up and get another upper to go full AR and practice with the platform for much less.

Are you wanting to build your rifle, or buy a complete rifle?
I'm thinking just buy one complete. My company is paying a bonus next week so its burning a hole already. I built the AR I have now so I could build if the price was right.

But for the speed to get to the range I'm thinking complete.

iirc, none of the off-the-shelf 22 ar's are interchangeable with standard configuration ar's.

I'd either buy/build a dedicated 22 upper, or look into the cmmg conversion bolts for a standard ar.

There is a Spikes with a 22lr upper for sale in the Classifieds right now ;)

btw... if you are looking for a trainer, then consider simply purchasing a conversion kit so you can just shoot .22lr out of your .223 barrel.

I maybe wrong, but I don't think you can buy a complete 22lr that has a standard AR lower. I think your going to have to buy a standard AR and get a 22 upper later.

I had a Tactical Solutions dwdficated upper, standard M4 configuration, that was very nice but I sold it. I just was not into the whole AR 22lr thing. Worked well though.

Not to hijack a thread, but I have a similar question - I own a standard Mil-spec 5.56 AR and am considering the .22lr conversions that seem pretty fairly priced. I'm just not familiar with how they work - is this just a drop-in BCG and magazine and that's it? Or is it more involved somehow? Any experiences or tips to relate?

Thanks for the info I think the plan will be buy a lower and build it. Pick up a 556 upper and then a converting kit that way it's a true 556 AR so down the road I won't regret it.

Ok for those looking into the AR .22 conversions...i have tried the CMMG and black dog...yeah. I bought a M&P 22 AR and i wont EVER lok to another conversion. I had many misfeeds, mag troubles, fail to fire and fail to extract properly..just a lot of inconsistency in the conversions...my M&P runs like a raped ape. I would say spend the cash and pick up a nice M&P. Itll take all your AR goodies and it really runs great.

I'd cut my losses and get a dedicated 22LR in specific the M&P15-22
    If you get a 22LR BCG in a standard 223 lower/upper you wont get accuracy. You'll be sending 22LR thru a 1:9(or 1:7;1:8) twist instead of 1:15
If you get a 22LR upper for an AR lower you might as well just get a 15-22 for roughly the same price. Uppers are 300-350$ IIRC? 15-22 is 450$ 475$ on a bad day

I have a CMMG kit, but without the BHOA. It runs fine for me and lets me use my AR on pistol ranges. The accuracy has been ok at those ranges, but agree it isn't as good as a dedicated .22. I have other .22's that I use when a .22 is "needed" but it is a good, relatively inexpensive option to get some use out of my AR without having to drive an extra hour to a rifle range and using cheap .22LR ammo. Just run it wet! If I were buying it again though I would get the BHOA but found this one on a good deal on Amazon.

I have a CMMG with black dog mags, both the standard as well as drums. I probably have 10k+ rounds through it with only a handful of malfunctions. Those malfunctions were because I was using the wrong ammo. I have have since only used CCI and have never had any issues.
