    1. What is the minimum tool list I can reasonably get away with?

    2. Must I buy a castle nut wrench for the buttstock, and if so, are their different sizes for commercial vs mil spec buffer tubes?

You should- A three prong unit will fit most castle nuts.
The proper torque is 38>42ft lbs... NOT inch lbs.

And stake it when your done.

    3. Del Ton says to have a gunsmith check the head space, is this necessary, or is this lawyer stuff?

Not typically necessary for a factory built upper assembly but not a bad idea either... especially when purchasing a lower tier product.

    4. Anything else I need to know for my first build?

Pay attention to the small details... these are the one that make or break a successful build.

Dont cheat yourself. If you are going to build a weapon make sure you use the correct tools and specs for the weapon you are building.
    LIST
    castle wrench
    roll pin holders
    punches
    vise block

One broken part will cost as much as buying the correct tools, plusyou will always have them for any new weapon upgrdes or new builds.

Don't you know that a P38 can do pretty much anything - from slitting a guard's throat in a POW camp to overhauling a jeep engine? Clearly sir, you know very little about the mighty P38.
