I just left my local Wally World (walmart) after stopping in to resupply on .22lr. The gentleman that helped me was pretty cool, until he started to ring me up.

*beep* "your not using this in a pistol are you?"

    me:"excuse me?"

him: "I said your not using these in a handgun are you?!?" (with an irritated tone)

me: " does it matter? I've never been asked that one before....?"

him: "I can't sell these to you if they are being used in a handgun. It's policy."

me: "well I guess it's a good thing I'm using them in a plinking rifle then...." (my smartass tone came out at this point)

Anyone have any idea why this is an issue with walmart? I don't think it should matter what I'm using my ammo in....

All I could think was "WTF does it matter?"

The cashier was somewhat misinformed. He can't sell pistol ammunition to you if you're under 21. They always ask if it's for pistol or rifle. Always say "rifle", as they can sell you the same exact ammo if it'll be used in a rifle. I suspect he was just confused about the store's policy and how it follows the law.

There is an age reaquirement to purchae handgun ammo. If you are young or look young they will ask you.

They'll ask you regardless of your age. It's a question that pops up on their screen and they have to answer it before they can complete the transaction.

i used to have a hi-point 9mm carbine and everytime i bought ammo for it before i was 21 they always asked no matter where i was it being walmart or a gun store, what kind of weapon i was using since they cant legally sell it to me for a handgun....funny i could have my 1911 on my hip loaded legally but can't buy ammo for it.

There's no reason he couldn't sell it to you if it were for a pistol. The only thing I've ever ran across at Walmart is being carded for ammo. They card for pistol ammo and don't for rifle ammo. I just always tell them it's for a rifle, no matter what I'm buying.

I guess age has it's advantages. I have never been asked although I am aware of what the beep means when they ring me up every week...

No, I'll just take them in the box they are already in there unless you want to put them in a sack.

    Cash or credit?

Credit. Yer not going to use this to to support the Commie Red Chinese Army are you? How about to buy drugs or porn?

I had the sales girl at WM in Martinsville ask me that last week. I didn't think much of it and just said "Rifle". I definitely don't look young and she said they just had to ask.

I was asked this question at the Noblesville Wally world but have never been asked at the other Wally worlds here on the southside.

This comes up every once in a while. Used to come up almost 20 years ago when I lived in FL. Like others have said, its related to age requirement. I used to always answer rifle. Now I must look old enough that it just doesn't matter anymore. I do like some of the answers that others have proposed.

    lol.

I usually say shotgun. Occasionally I get a strange look, but I've never been questioned on buying .22lr or even 9mm for a shotgun.

The little old lady cashier I had one time got confused when I answered "It's for a long gun". I didn't say "pistol" or "rifle", so she didn't know how to respond. I can only imagine what the word "shotgun" would have done.
