Atlas Shrugged is being made into a movie. The release date is 2011. Somehow this may be more appropriate at that time than ever before....

There has been talk of a film version of Atlas for some time now, and I am still sceptical of it ever being produced. After looking at the political leaning of Hollywood of the last several years it is hard for me to think that most people out there could actually comprehend the book.

Atlas however is one of the most important books ever printed in this country and becomes more so every day. The lessons in it are needed today. I read the news paper every day and I am reminded of Atlas. The flood has started and I don't think we can stop it. And so I draw the sign and take the oath.

I'm pretty conservative but haven't heard much about Atlas Shrugged before. I just got on ebay last night and bought the book. I've read a general overview of what it's about and I'm sure it will be good. I've been telling people this for awhile that the rich are going to quit one of these days.

    Anyone else reading Atlas Shrugged

I'm very conservative and follow politics pretty closely and have heard of many major conservative talking heads and news sources but for some reason have never really heard of Atlas Shrugged. I'd heard the name Ayn Rand before but didn't know anything about her.

I'm about 200 pages into the book and all I can say is WOW!!! The more I read, the more I get into it and can heavily identify with the main characters. I'm not a business owner and work for a company but I think people at any level can identify with them if you have a strong sense of self pride, ie. you believe any job worth doing is worth doing right, earning everything you make, etc.

I thought at first that Rand must be a profit to predict what is happening over 50 years ago but the more I think about it, there has been a war against the producers of this society since the beginning of time. It wasn't til the American Revolution that there ever was a government experience that allowed production to explode into what it has today and a nation has become so prosperous.

I see the people that Dagney, Francisco, and Hank despise every day. I go in and try to work hard to earn my pay only to watch my co workers slack off and get paid the same or more than I do. They have the socialist midset that "hey, if I can get away with doing nothing, I will".

    Anybody else have any thoughts?

I have been trying to find it in my area but have been unsuccessful so far. I have heard it referred to so many times recently that I have become curious as well.

I got my paperback copy off of ebay for around $8 shipped. It's a pretty thin cover so I may seek out nice hardback copy to keep for posterity.

It's a bit heavy handed at times, but it's a good summary of randism/objectivisim, people tend to either love it or hate it.

I read it last winter and I can't help but draw parallels today. Ayn Rand tended to suffer from diarrhea of the typewriter, but her points are good. John Galt's speech is a good example of that. 64 pages long.

I first read Atlas when I was 16 and thought it was a cool book, but that was about it. Then about 3 years ago I started to read it again and realized how much of my philsophy is based on objectivism. Now it seems as if I am reading Atlas and Fountainhead every year. And on January 20th I had Equality 72521 tattooed on my left wrist.

Atlas is simply amazing. Wait till you get a little further into it, that is when you can start to really realize the inherant problems in the system and in the world today. And yes Atlas can be dense, actually it is one of the heaviest books I have ever read. But it is well worth it. I am using Atlas to convert a leftist exgirlfriend right now. First I had her read Fountainhead and turned her into a moderate, now that she is working through Atlas every conversation get better.

I am seriously considering getting the oath tattooed on my back.
