Got a question for you. I've got an '89 mustang gt convertible in which the air is inop due to lost charge. Apparently been this way for awhile 'cause when I blew air through the condenser white powder (oxidized aluminum?) came out. Anyhow I would like to properly convert it to R134 since R12 will only become more expensive till it's non-existent.

What'll it take to correctly convert this? I plan on replacing the lines due to age, I've heard that the condensor for R12 is too small for 134 and that the expansion valve etc should also be replaced. Opinions? Facts? Local COMPETENT shop? I"m in Mooresville so base local on that.:dunno:

If the system has a hole in it somewhere causing the loss of feon I would replace the dehydrator it's job is to absorb moisture in the A/C system.
If there is a leak then it will draw moisture from the atmosphere and need replacing.
From what you said I about the inside of the condenser being contaminated enough to blow out a powder. I would replace it as well. You already said you are doing the lines. The only real thing that leaves is the compressor
Since it has been inop so long no telling if it is good or not. It will work with 134A if the seals are still good.
Depending on your funds you could do the musts, charge it and see what shape the compressor is in or.

I can help if you like, I am in Avon

I had a similar problem with an '85 pick up. Tried purging and refilling it with 134. AC works now, but doesn't get nearly cold enough to be of much use. You're correct about the compressor being under sized. To do it right, it will need to be changed.

#1) If I were you and Allen is close, I wouldn't hesitate to take it to him.

#2) this is really related more to Mr. Habib's post, but if anyone has an R12 system and they are wanting to convert it to something more readily available, cheaper, and something that actually works well with an R12 sized system, I would look at some of the replacements made for that such as Freeze12, Duracool, or the like (or if you know what your doing propane ;) ).

    anyway, just my $0.02
