All of my knives are frame, or liner lock.

One big advantage of my kershaw auto, is in closing the knife, much easier to push a button, than removing a liner or frame lock.

I have a Boker Speedlock 3000 that is auto. I'm not very educated in knives but the thing is very handy for me. Especially if whatever I need to cut is already in my left hand. I like the fact that I can open the knife one handed and not have to really move it around in my hand to get it in a good position.
I'm not even sure where Boker ranks in a quality level compared to others in the price range but it has worked great for me for about 4 years of daily carry.

I have purchased 3 microtech knives in the past. Love the craftsmanship and quality, not so much the price. I think your right when you said self defense and not much more. I wouldn't dare try prying anything with them.
