If you were moving when reloading, like you are supposed to be, the mag wouldn't have had time to hit your toe.
Practice in front of a chair or couch. Then you won't have to bend so far to pick them up.

Maybe I should resort to this. After Dry Firing all winter I tossed a mag 5 feet after missing the magwell Saturday

basket on couch is good.
pillow on floor to tuck feet under is good.
pretend mag is good (but be careful you don't get lazy on the mag release!)
