I have noticed that many rifles offer barrels in different lengths. AR style rifles being the most common with a 16, 20 or 24(?) inch available. So what are the advantages or disadvantages of the different lengths?
The longer barrel will give you more velocity, shorter barrel are easier to go around obstacles

Would a zombie be considered a varmit?
For instance, my AR wears a 20" Krieger barrel with a 1:7.7 twist that give me 6" groups at 600 yds with an 80 gr. bullet.

If a highpower rifle shooter is competing in service rifle class, you have to use the length barrel that came as it was issued. For the AR that is 20 inches. I used 24 and 26 inch barrels in match rifle class. There are issues with timing when you get a longer barrel unless you also relocate the gas block. There is also a case capacity issue with the little 5.56 round. It will not hold enough slower burning powder to really optimize the barrel at longer lengths. I actually had my 26 inch barrel counter bored two inches so the bullet was only on rifling for 24 inches. The reason I didn't just cut it off was to keep the long sight radius which is allowable in the Match rifle rules.

. . . the statement that 200yards is the maximum effective range of a 16" 5.56 is a little.. .wrong.
Well, it depends what kind of ammunition one is using and how one defines "effective."
Are you shooting FMJ? What weight? JHP? All perform differently at 200 yds from a 16" barrel.
If "effective" simply means hitting the target, that's one thing.
If "effective" means having a telling or incapacitating effect on a target, that's something else.
If one is shooting M193 from a 16" barrel and defines effective as including fragmentation of the bullet and rapid incapacitation of human targets, then 150 meters is about the max.
Different requirements - different "effectiveness." So, it depends.
Indy John, good picture of the KD range, I shot there last in 2002. Were you shooting there long enough to have shot with me? Regards, Leo
