Im guessing there is a reason that no one is using that style anymore, but how effective is that design compared to a conventional baffle.

According to the owner of these they are loud after 25 rounds.

It is a very very outdated design, but you also have to remember that these were very mission specific cans that were mainly used in cladestine raids that probably used more steath then shooting.

As in 25 and you have to replace the mesh? Or 25 at full auto then a cool down?

The WWII stuff is always amazing!

    Fun stuff!

I'm enamored with militaria; and don't have the resources/time/knowledge to really indulge myself!

Corey, have you ever read any of W.E.B. Griffin's novel series? If you're a reader, you'd probably like his stuff!

Basically after 25 rounds the heat sink(mesh) is too hot to absorb more heat and the efficiency is lost for further rounds until its cooled down. They do not melt much unless they are subjected to constant use without cooling. Most of them did not have melting in the first part of the mesh but you could tell the ones that were abused since they had some melting/erosion of the screen. This design was the beginning of the technology that we have today, and yes a modern baffle will perform better over a longer period of time than the screen. Also since the mesh is very fine it gets filled up with lead and silica from the powder very fast and it wold not last for a lot of rounds without a replacement of the mesh. This was the best in its day. Properly used on a Grease gun it was extremely accurate and very effective in what it was designed for.

Thanks Corey for the opportunity to examine these rare gems. Just wish we could shoot them.

First thought , potato masher grenades .

Second guess , barrels for M3 grease guns.

    Wrong answer :n00b: they're silencers .

Actually your 2nd guess was right also.

These are WWII era M3/M3A1 SMG "Grease Gun" Silencers.

The history behind them is that they were originally in a batch of 1000 by the OSS during the late stages of WWII. They were ordered "clean" which means no manufacturers markings were added to the suppressors themselves as is evident by the 19 we examined.

Later the silencers were used by the CIA and then by other Special Forces units including Delta Force during the abandoned raid of Iran in 1980.

These are the "cool of cool" when it comes to old secret technology!!!

Most people will go an entire collecting lifetime and never see one, so the chance to examine 19 at one time was....PRICELESS!!!
