I've read many, many posts on the board and hate to revisit an already discussed topic, but some of the info was over a year old and there are some new companies to add to the manufacturing list, so here I go.

Looking to buy a .45, prefer Colt, but not locked in...yet. Looking to spend under $1000. What's my best bet? Really not intersted in the hi-cap or polymer models, more of a traditionalist.

    Thanks!

I don't have any experience with 1911 but the few Springfield Armories I've held seemed like they were pretty nice. They can also be found new for well under $1000.

You can never go wrong with a Colt. I have a commander and a defender. Springfield makes good 1911's for the under $1000. If you want to spend less Rock Island Armory has some very affordable 1911's.

i bought a 5" Rock Island Tactical 1911 of an INGO member a couple weeks back and I love it. It does have upgraded sights, guide rod, and extended mag release. but its proven to be very reliable, and looks sharp too. ive already put 300 rounds through it. no malfunctions yet.

i like the tactical military, parkerized simple but reliable look. im not as into the glitzed up stuff, but some of it i do like.

Tons of 1911's for under that price. You can go with any of the "big" 1911 production manufacturer and not go wrong. Kimber (the TLE II is a great gun that the LAPD SWAT carrys), Colt (nice name to have for the historical prospective, hard to beat the prancing pony), Springfield (they have a of a lot of models that would suit you, and arguably the best CS in the business), Wesson (since they are getting a lot more popular getting harder to find one for under a grand).

For a few hundred less RIA is a good manufacturer to look at, lot of fans of them here on INGO.

For a few hundred more a used Les Baer TRS is one very sweeeeet gun (and my dream gun :D).

Good luck to you and make sure to post what you decide to get (and some porn of it).

Yeah, I've perused the FOR SALE site, but as a new user with under 50 posts I can't reply to the sellers. Makes me sad..*sniff sniff*. I'm working hard to get my posts up there so I can wheel & deal. Was hoping to trade a new, unfired DPMS PCAR A2 AR for one, but may have to sell and buy one outright. Always wanted one (Colt), but I've never allowed myself to spend that kind of money. Figured if I trade, I'm really not spending money...right? Besides, then the wife won't know! But thanks for the info so far. I'm compiling so I'll have a backup plan in case my frugality overtakes me again and I decide to spend less.

I have a RIA and American Classic II. I have not had a problem with either and they are both great at the range with various grades of ammo. Can't be beat for the money.

If you are looking at a Colt for around 1000.00 i'd look at the combat elite. Other than that then for one of the series '70 repros in either blue or stainless.

I just bought a parkerized Springfield Mil-Spec a few weeks ago and could not be happier with it. Excellent gun for the money. I bought it new at Bradis for $619.00 so it is well within your price range.I have fired a couple of Kimbers and one Colt and though I liked them a lot I can't say that I really think that it would have been worth the extra money to go with either of them. The money you would save would buy quite a bit of ammo.

the para GI is a good deal but for a few $$ more any entry level kimber you wouldn't go wrong with either!

I have an RIA compact (3 1/2"), a Springfield Mil-Spec (full size) and a Kimber Ultra Carry II (3") and of all of them, I'd say the RIA was the best bang for the buck. The RIA has a decent feature set for the money and the trigger feels no different than the Kimbers. It's about 10 ounces heavier than the Kimber, but other than that, it compares very well.

There are a lot of nice 1911's available, but since you are asking about bang for the buck I am going to say RIA. Any of the Amscor Philippine manufactured guns are excellent. RIA is at the low price end of those.

If your a traditionalist, then by all means get a Colt. If your looking for a solid 1911 under $1000 with excellent customer service and a lifetime warranty then give Springfield Armory a look.

Since nobody else has mentioned it yet, my first 1911 was (still is) a Taurus. It had about 700 rounds through it when I got it from an INGOer for $500. I've lost track of how many rounds I've put through it now, but it's a lot, and I've never had any kind of failure with it.

Brand new, it'd only be $600. It really is one of the best quality per dollar options for 1911s. Taurus also has a lifetime warranty.

You can Google reviews on it, but here's one I found especially helpful when I was considering purchasing it.
