although the 870 and the 500 are damn near equal and both have positives and negatives i prefer the slicker action of the 870 which is why i give it the edge.

Well, lotsa folks will say"try a bunch, see what you like",which is fine. If you want to get one multipurpose gun, presumably to keep costs down, the Rem. and Msbrg. combo's are great-Deer and small game, skeet, all doable. Add an 18 in. bbl. for home defense;you've got it all covered, for as little as $250ish [used mossy88,for instance]

I'm in the market for a shotgun and I can't decide between a Remington 870, Mossberg 500, or Winchester 1300.....Any thoughts on Winchester 1300?

I'd better help even the score…

    Remington 870.

I've owned both a Mossberg 500 and a Remington 870, and while both functioned 100%, side by side the Mossberg felt cheaper and loose in comparison.

Gee depends on what you are going to do with it? If hunting goose I would want a parkerized 3 1/2 magnum, for Clays or general rabbit etc. hunting, a Mossberg 500 or 870 - really comes down to personally preference and pocketbook! Bernilli is great if you have the bankroll! I have a Winchester and really like it, also have a 500.

Really 870 is the way to go. See if you can find yourself an older wingmaster or police and you'll be good to go. The action on those older wingmasters is as smooth as butter, and finding whatever barrel length/type you're interested in should be a breeze and relatively cheap.

Own a old mossy 500 from when the police still used them as there shotguns, and it hasn't failed me yet and I've ran it in the rain and in the snow. It does need a bigger safety though truthfully.
