Dick's downtown is pretty good as is GT South's but if I had to pick one it'd be Squealer's at 86th/Michigan. I tried City BBQ out near Avon earlier this year and it'll be a loooong time before they any more of my money. The "smoked" chicken tasted like it had been boiled and I didn't care for their sauces much.

I am voting for king ribs. The one on W16 is always a great hit.

Rendezvous is a tourist trap and far from the best BBQ in Memphis. It's highly overrated. Interstate does a far better job than them, but Leonard's has a looong tradition of good eats.

Can't really argue with that. I went once about 20 years ago and had the best dry ribs ever. I went back about 5 years ago and was completely disappointed.

In a state of acute Pork-i-docis
I'm a big fan of Hickory Hills down in Edinburgh. While their rubs are a bit mild, the local "Mild to Wild" sauces they use are top notch. While they have an off day from time to time, their smoking techniques are top notch and it is clear that the place is run by a true BBQ afficionado. (Plus he is a heck of a nice guy. He is hooking me up with some Ghost Peppers.)

Not a fan of City BBQ, their rubs seem to be grossly oversalty, perhaps so they can get more of what they call a "smoke ring". I can't say I could taste any smoke through the salt. That is one of the reasons my rubs are all but salt-free. I want to be able to see and taste how effective my ever evolving techniques are.

I really don't think that truly remarkable BBQ can be franchised with any consistency. Every rack of ribs, every log of hardwood etc, every batch of spices is different and you really have to have someone with a passion for smoking doing it personally to get the most out of BBQ. I'm not saying that Famous Daves, Smokey Bones etc can't put out "good" 'que because they do put out a good tasting product most of the time. That said, there is just something I almost always find lacking in their offerings.

    Best,

    Joe

I'm not really impressed with Black Diamond or GT Souths. Some of the best BBQ I have had in this state was in some hole in the wall family joint in Anderson. Maybe a local knows what I'm talking about...

I wish I could confirm, but I haven't had a reason to be in TH for 10 years. The nice old guy that used to run the range right next to the ISU stadium isn't there anymore; RHIT got enough of my money that I feel no need to return for Homecoming; the strippers at 6th Avenue are probably the same ones that were there 10 years ago (and were likely the same ones from 10 years before that); and there's no longer a poker game going on in the back of the Canopy Club. About the only reason I can think of to return would be to go to Csonka's for a beer and a sandwich, train with Jack McVicker, or get some BBQ at Big Shoes.

    agreed:D

That was an awesome range. We would practice .22 for rifle team. After a session of that, I had black snot. Just a wonderful range.

Wish I got a chance to shoot at the new range under the new stadium bleachers. Opened 2 years after I graduation from RHIT, I think.

I have a standing lunch meeting almost every Thursday afternoon with a recently deceased hot pig at King ribs West 16th St. The que is sometimes a little hit and miss but for for the most part it makes my tummy very happy.

Part of the experience however is the ambiance. The remarkably bland surroundings complement the sweet moist taste of pork on a bun with mixed sauce, and a side of potato salad.

They have a different special every day of the week which makes lunch very affordable.

    Concealed carry recommended.

    Overall three stars. :yesway:

Hard Times BBQ in the southeast corner of sherman and raymond streets is pretty good and fairly priced too.

It is definately a dive place and not really the nicest building or dining area, but I get it for takeout and it always amazes me.

City BBQ is also pretty good as many have stated.

Squealers has never impressed me and Famous Daves was equally mediocre to me.
