I hate top 10 lists, so ridiculous to me as it is so subjective. My suggestion would be to focus on mindset first, understanding that using a handgun to defend yourself isn't as simple as it sounds nor should it be taken lightly. Once your there ask your self how you will carry (pocket (NO!), IWB, AIWB, OWB, ankle, etc..), then find something that fits you regardless of lists or suggestions. Everyone here will give you good suggestions but really only you can find what works best for you from a fit and function perspective. I would also recommend getting a model in the 9mm, 40, or 45 caliber. Again, many opinions relative to caliber but these three work consistently to deliver sufficient damage to your threat so that they stop being one.
You need to go handle several and if possible rent and shoot. I don't consider most of those compact as well but that's how the companies have chosen to describe them.
