A 1911 is next on my list of purchases but I'm not sure if I want to spend $800+ on one. Is there anything worth buying in the $400-$600 range? If so, any suggestions on the best one? This is also my first 1911

Looking for something that will hold it's value.

I would shoot for a Springfield Mil Spec or Ranger officer around there. Or a GI if you can find one, they are cheaper but I haven't seen many sitting around gun shops lately.

For what it's worth, $400 - $600 is the low, LOW end of 1911s.

Mid range is more like $900 - $1250. In that range, I'd go with a Springfield TRP.

High is $1500 and up in my opinion.

I found a colt govt model on here last year for 600 with ammo and holster one of the best guns I have ever shot. I also just picked up a r1 for 625 not a bad piece but not a favorite. I picked up a used sw1911 with crimson trace grips and full length guide rod for 550 at a gun show last year it will shoot anything everytime (highly recomend). I did find a sr1911 on here a week ago that I got for 750 my new favorite. I got a sa1911 mil spec for 400 also very good gun just bad mags. my point is this I guess, keep saving money till you find a good one. you can find some good deals on occasion for that price range. 1911's are addicting if you get a good one and bad medicine if you get one with issuse's

Makes/Models worth buying in your desired price range: ($400-$600 ish)
    Rock Island Armory GI/Tactical
    Springfield GI/Mil-spec
    Remington R1
    Para Ordinance
Taurus (controversial, but like the others, mine was flawless)

Slightly above of your price range but worth holding out for: ($600-$900 ish)
    Ruger SR1911
    Springfield 'Range Officer' or 'Loaded'
    Colt (used)
    Sig
    STI (used)
    S&W (used)

    Further up there: ($1000+)
    Springfield TRP
    S&W
    STI
    Nicer Colts
    Kimbers
Custom Makers (Nighthawk, Dan Wesson, Ed Brown, Les Baer, Wilson Combat, etc)

Like many others, I would recommend saving a little bit more and getting a Springfield or a Sig.

I bought a Rock Island 1911 tactical in black/nickel for $479 through KS&E on Pendleton Pike in Indy I like it haven't had any issues.....

It depends on what you are looking for. RI will go bang when you pull the trigger. You'll pay a little more for features (beaver tail, lowered ejection port, skeletonized trigger/hammer, better sights, etc.) Once you get above a certain price ($1000-$1200?) it's all about fit and finish.

I second the Rock Islands! I have fed all kinds of ammo through it with no FTF. It's right in that price range!
