All the time and everywhere, apparently. Wikileaks strikes again, (and they're currently under attack via DDOS) and gives up the surveillance state. They're apparently everywhere and watching all the time. Who would have thought "1984" was a training manual.

WIKILEAKS: Surveillance Cameras Around The Country Are Being Used In A Huge Spy Network - Business Insider

Sadly, every statist, of whatever stripe, that read it. Maybe we should limit the first amendment against dystopian fiction just to prevent such errors and outcomes in the future...we would be preserving our freedom by limiting it...

This has been underway for some time.

See the linked article from Naomi Klein written in 2008:

Now, if only there were a face full of books which citizens would willingly populate to help use the facial recognition software to gain more details on individual citizens.

(Though it is spun as humor, there is much truth in it)

As time goes on, the technology grows...

A Japanese company has developed a camera system which stores and indexes faces via facial recognition software and can scan those captured and stored images at a rate up to 36,000,000 per second.

How much detail can you pick up on those far away?

This is the technology made public. One might wonder what there is that is not made public.

The state continues to expand.... and many will scoff at those who question it or express concern.

I'd take that with a grain of salt. I would guess it actually queries a database that contains an index of facial features from pre-registered images to narrow it down for a more comprehensive comparison. It can probably perform that index search within 10-seconds or so, leaving another 90-seconds to parse the results (30-million per second = 3-billion per 100 seconds).

Could something like 'facebook' be a database containing an index of facial features an registered images?
