Yes it is a handgun and therefore you need a LTCH to carry it off of your property.

IC 35-47-1-6
"Handgun"
Sec. 6. "Handgun" means any firearm:
(1) designed or adapted so as to be aimed and fired from one (1) hand, regardless of barrel length; or
(2) any firearm with:
(A) a barrel less than sixteen (16) inches in length; or
(B) an overall length of less than twenty-six (26) inches.

IC 35-47-1-5
"Firearm" Sec. 5. "Firearm" means any weapon:
(1) that is:
(A) capable of expelling; or
(B) designed to expel; or
(2) that may readily be converted to expel;
a projectile by means of an explosion.

They aren't considered as firearms by the Fed when you purchase them. They can be readily mail ordered and sent to your home without FFL transfer.

IANAL- But I THINK the state can make a stronger law that the federal law just as in a case with OSHA vs IOSHA.
So if there is an Indiana Code considering them firearms then it is considered a firearm. BUT you can still buy them reguardless of age most of the time and they CAN be shipped through the mail to an individual as long as they will NOT accept a modern brass cartridge. The must have each chamber(ina revolver) loaded seperately and a cap on each nipple, with singles it must be a muzzleloader or a breech loader that takes only paper cartridges and a seperate cap.Otherwise even if theh use regular old fashion black powder or a modern replacement for black powder they are moder firearms.

Does indiana count the black powder pistol as a handgun?

Under what circumstances? Carrying? SVF? On school grounds?

It depends, sometimes yes, sometimes no.

Yes it is a handgun and therefore you need a LTCH to carry it off of your property.

Look at Indiana Code 35-47-2-19.

They aren't considered as firearms by the Fed when you purchase them.

Remember your railroad tracks--state and federal. Often the trains run at different times.
I take IC 35-47-2-19 to exempt non-cartridge firing weapons then. Is that correct?
Let's look at 35-47-2-19:

IC 35-47-2-19
Application of chapter
Sec. 19. This chapter does not apply to any firearm not designed to use fixed cartridges or fixed ammunition, or any firearm made before January 1, 1899.
As added by P.L.311-1983, SEC.32.

Remember T-A-C-S (Title, Article, Chapter, Section). Chapter 2 contains Indiana's license to carry statute. Thus, blackpowder pistols and not handguns for the LCTH requirement.

If you do carry an antique or a BP revovler, ensure that you carry this statute on you and be prepared to be patient as the cops sort everything out.:D
Blackpowder pistols are handguns/firearms for Indiana's SVF statute inter alia.

No, not being a dick, just pointing out the correct statute.

It gets confusing because of the interplay of state and federal law.

Step 1, define your world.

Step 2, see what federal law says.

Step 3, see what Indiana law says.

Step 4, see what the Court of Appeals/Supreme Court says.:D
