Forgive me if I'm not straight to the point....
For the last couple months, I've been deployed to Iraq. It's a great time, really....The only fighting I get to participate in is the daily fight against boredom. Which, I suppose, is a good thing, since any other fighting could result in death/injury to myself or my fellow servicemen. One of the ways I fight boredom is periodically dropping in on my favorite web forums, such as this one. In the last couple days however, I've experienced a problem doing so from the MWR computers provided for service personnel to use. It is now coming up as blocked "Your organization's internet use policy restricts access to this web page at this time. Reason: The Websense category 'weapons' is filtered."

This same page is displayed when I try and go to another forum, the Second Amendment Society. I just thought you all might get a kick out of the fact that my access to a gun site is restricted while I'm over here "defending freedom." Does anybody have an explanation why the DoD, or its contractor would feel the need to limit access to info on weapons. It's not like we don't have an abundant supply of weaponry and knowledge at our disposal. Could it be somehow tied to Ft Hood?

By the way, I'm posting this using the slower than dialup internet connection available for purchase in my "can" (the living arrangement where I am). Thankfully, the 'net in my can isn't regulated.

    regards,
    devil

    Thanks for your service

Well, devil07, I sincerely hope being blocked from INGO is the worst thing that happens to you over there. Please know that your service is appreciated and we'll hope for your safe return. :patriot:

Well, I assume there has to be an IT department here, since there is an internet service...I'll have to ask the Comm Sgt attached to my platoon about that. Hopefully he can shed some light on the subject.

eta: I'm posting this from my "can" (the living arrangements here). There is a slower than dialup connection available for purchase in my can, which is awesome. Simply because I can subscribe to internet, in Iraq, and actually have time to complain about the speed.....*sighs* this is not the deployment I enlisted for......

    I'm sorry you are blocked.

BTW, God Bless you and all your fellow soldiers in Iraq. Thanks for serving our country. And, I hope it stays boring (safe) your entire deployment. :patriot:

Not sure why you guys would be blocked. I work for DOD (Crane) and I have no trouble with access to this site or any other gun or pro 2nd amendment site. I would get with your comm officer as you stated.

If I were to guess, they are probably using a default filter. Most of these will block porn, violence, hate groups...etc. They should probably be Bi7ch slapped for blocking the military for looking at weapons.

First and foremost Thank You for your service. Even if your not in combat I know the kind of sacrifices you make.

Next it amazes me how things have changed. For a lot of the older guys on here "in country" used to mean isolated and cut off, except for random mail call where you received mail that was months old. The only contact other than mail you had was Armed Forces radio, then came Armed Forces TV, sometimes a camp could set up telephone call centers and it kept going now you can surf the net. Its incredible what you have available and it's a good thing. I know there are older guys here that think the same thing when they see live chats from Iraq on the TV news, service people taking about internet access, e-mail etc. I'm glad you have some way to stay in touch.

    God Bless and be Safe

As an army significant other, I know how rediculous the internet access over there can be with government computers(while not experiencing it in person I know it is a problem) While I understand they would not want you looking at porn at work or on gov. property...filtering INGO out is a bunch of hooey. Anyhow thanks to all you servicemen, who like my honey are sacrificing alot for your country and the people you love.
