After the academic scandal North Carolina had, Dean Smith cannot say that...

Dean's not saying much these days, he died in 2015.
The African Studies program began under Smith, not that he was involved in it's development. It became a full blown method of keeping academic underperforming athletes under Roy Williams. I lost interest in college sports when the NCAA finally issued it's findings after six years and found no violations because the fake classes were open to all students. NCAA is a joke. Well, maybe its a business according to this article.

Funny how they used to at least try to pretend that they were student-athletes....

A good thing about Coach Knight, he had one of the most honest programs in the NCAA.
When I was at IU, I can attest to the fact that Knight also kept on the kids to go to class and get a degree.
    This was known around campus.

They also, like athletes in other sports (that had coaches who cared about the kids) had access to private tutors if they were having any trouble in classes.

I had a room mate one year that was on the IU Cross Country and Track team in the Coach Sam Bell days.
There were a few times where he met with a private tutor when there was a class he was needing some additional instruction.
He graduated with an honest degree and has a good career.

Unlike many coaches, Knight's players were for the most part "student athletes", and not just "ringers" that were JUST recruited to just play NCAA Men's Basketball, were functionally illiterate, and then tossed aside with no education.
