I have seen a lot of bolt action shotguns for sale with missing magazines. Could most of them function as a single shot without the mag, or are they pretty much worthless if a replacement can not be found?

50 dollar shotgun (with mag) + missing mags costing 20-30 to replace (some sources)= no attempt to get another.

Some of the JC Higgins are notorious for stock splitting.

However, I did see an old Marlin 55 Goose Gun at a shop recently. That'd be kinda fun to hammer a turkey with :)

My father has one of these bolt action shotguns with a magazine. I used to collect WW2 guns and love the history behind different guns. In my opinion this gun has a cool history as it represents a time when guns were bought in the hardware store for a little of nothing. Since the history doesn't involve WW2 or other huge events it doesn't command a premium, but to a gun owner it represents a rather unique time in the history of buying guns.

Plus for a SHTF gun what can go wrong with a bolt action shotgun?

Nostalgic/sentimental value may be high, and the guns themselves may work..............but why would anybody want a slow and limited capacity rig...........for any serious hunting or defense?

Maybe a Browning A bolt for deer, because they are nice and reportedly shoot well........but even then, when I can get under 2" groups @100 yds from a pump rig.............I just don't see it.

I was thinking more along the lines of something to blow up pumpkins with.
