People either love or hate Terry Prachett. His Discword series is up to 30 plus books and is one of the best worldwide selling series in history. Few books have made me laugh outloud as these books. The last ten or so are more serious, which the first ten are more goofy. You really should start from the beginning but if you want to jump in the middle I'd start with either Hogfather or Going Postal.

Terry Goodkind - Sword of Truth series

I would not recommend the Sword of Truth series to anyone. While the first book was mildly amusing the following books were highly repetitive and recycled the same plot ideas throughout each book. If the main characters spent ten minutes being honest with each other in the first chapter none of the books would last beyond 20 pages. Much of the plot lines are moved along by the device of otherwise supposedly smart people having an almost terminal case of being "willfully stupid".

There are only several really likable people in the whole series and that doesn't include the two main ones.

I'd second daddyusmaximus' recommendations and add in Burroughs' Carson of Venus series. I read everything the man ever wrote in my youth and they are awesome books. For something a bit newer, I'd suggest "Old Man's War" and "The Ghost Brigades" by John Scalzi. Excellent books and easy to read.
If you have a Kindle or other e-reader some of Burroughs works are available free from Archive.org or other online book repositories, like Project Guttenberg.

I second the books by John Scalzi. Great stuff! I'll also recommend any of the novels by L. E. Modesitt, Jr., especially in the Recluse or Imager series:

I tend to stick with the 'classic' authors: Isaac Asimov, Dean Koontz, H.P. Lovecraft, Arthur C. Clarke, Gene Roddenberry, H.G. Wells, Aldous Huxley, Ayn Rand, Michael Crichton, Robert Heinlein.

The Bourne series but if you like spy novels most likely you have already read them.

so much better than the movies.
Robert Ludlum was a great author. Any of his books are well worth reading. The movies only had the name and a vague plot resemblance to the books. I had to disassociate the two to be able to watch the movies/

As a Truck driver I have found out that if a book can keep me awake when I'm dead tired, then the author is really good. So I'll recommend a few authors not already mentioned in this thread (I think) that should be a slam-dunk for anyone interested in SciFi, Fantasy, and Urban Fantasy, as well as a couple normal thriller/adventure writers .

Ernest Kline - Ready Player One - Virtual Reality Fantasy - Best fiction about online virtual reality and gaming, ever!
Jim Buther- Harry Dresden and Codex Alera (Urban Fantasy)
David Weber - Honor Harrington (MilSciFi)
Benedict Jacka - Alex Verus (Urban Fantasy)
Brandon Sanderson and Robert Jordan - Favorite long-format epic Fantasy, plus some extras
Patrick Rothfuss - Fantasy Author par-excellence, but a big lib in real life. I heartily recommend despite his politics
Larry Correia as mentioned, because he's pretty expert on firearms and it comes through in his books... :)
Richard Kadrey - Sandman Slim - Urban Fantasy
Peter V Brett - Warded Man series- Fantasy
    Stuart Woods - Stone Barrington - Mystery/Adventure
Stephen Hunter - Swagger stories - Adventure/Thrillers about gunslingers and snipers that will grab you and keep you on the edge of your seat.
    Joe Abercrombie - Fantasy
    Brent Weeks - Fantasy
    Brian Stavely - Fantasy
Elliott James - John Charming - Urban Fantasy
    B V Larson - Mil Sci Fi
Marko Kloos - Mil Sci Fi
    W C Bauers - Mil Sci Fi
James Patterson - Thrillers and Chillers
John Sandford - Virgil Flowers series, and Lucas Davenport Series
Kevin Hearne - Iron Druid- Urban Fantasy
    Naomi Novik - Alternate History/Fantasy -
Col. Tom Kratman - Carrera series - Adult SciFi War/porn
WEB Griffin - Best Military fiction writer ever? Including Clancy? Maybe :) The longest certainly :)

I could go on, but this will help anyone looking for an author who can keep your interest when you'd rather be in bed sleeping :) Warning, you may become sleep deprived:)
