You can thank the USMC for the M16A2 changes.

They were quite annoyed with the M16A1, as they wanted much more accuracy.

So they went to the heavier bullet, 1:7 twist, heavier barrel, target sights, etc.

The 1:12 twist is no good for anything over 55 grains.

I think leaves and twigs drove the switch to 1:9.

the 12 twist was fine for the 62gr bullet, it was the equivalent tracer and it's length that drove the 1/7. at least that's my understanding.

Good luck making any of these supersonic rifles much quieter.

OP - Thanks for sharing, very neat idea from Brownell's.

no luck involved. Louder than a subsonic round, sure. But that sound is not as close to the shooter nor as loud as the pressure out of the muzzle. I plan to shoot some .308 through a silencer this afternoon. Works amazingly well.

I'm really lusting after one of these retro 308s. Would probably be one of the few gun I wouldn't mod or add a can to.

The military twist is 1:7, never was a 1:9 outside of testing. The USMC insisted upon the 1:7 from everything I've found on the subject and it became the standard from the A2 forward.
