I plan to upgrade my private rural range; I've flirted with the idea of railroad ties, but is there any safety/structural advantage to them over just having a big pile o' dirt? My current setup uses natural features (i.e. a hillside), and the added dirt would be largely for an added layer of safety. Are the ties strictly necessary?
Are RR ties even necessary? I'm a big fan of if you don't need it, don't do it. For example, I've never been to a a range that used RR ties as a backstop for the square range. Everyone seems to just pile up the dirt and plant some ground cover on it.
