I have to pick something up at Marion county jail, and didn't want to leave my pistol in The car to possibly get stolen. Anybody know the law/rule about lobby carry at MCSD?

Wolfy, the "rules" for carrying a gun in Indiana vary by jurisdiction for carrying in some places. For example, in Harrison County you cannot carry a firearm into the Justice Center, but you can carry in other county administrative offices. Some counties allow you to carry in the courthouse, most don't. I would say that most of us here are well aware of what we can and can't do in our own counties, but maybe a few are unsure and they ask before breaking the rules.

Ouch. That's a little harsh, don't you think? In its most basic form, if he's not a felon or a wacko, he has every right to carry a gun, Constitutionally speaking.

One of the great things about INGO is the availability for information to those who are new to gun ownership, including reviews, comparisons, places to shoot and yes, gun laws.

I completely agree with you that anyone who carries a handgun SHOULD be well acquainted with the laws thereto appertaining (a little lawyer lingo there). Personally, I think nobody should carry unless he's had sufficient training to do so safely, but that's not a common opinion here.

However, other than looking up and deciphering the particular IC regarding where to carry, INGO can be a quick, down-n-dirty place to find a quick answer. Not always the right answer, granted, but a quick one. The OP could have just searched the archives and gotten his answer without being unnecessarily chastised.

Some people are new to carrying. Some are just getting comfortable with the concept. I think a little encouragement to dig deeper and gain the requisite knowledge to carry safely and knowledgeably would go farther than beratement, don't you? :)

Do you? Do you drive? Do you know all the traffic laws?

yes. i did take the drivers test and passed. so yes i know the rules of the road just like i know the rules and laws of my CCW. it was the first thing i did before i every started to carry. i made sure to know my state and local laws on carrying my hand gun.

@ N8RV. you maybe right. but still every gun owner should already know the very basic of gun carrying laws.

The last jail I was in, had a sign in the lobby, on the door going into the jail that read "no guns beyond this point"....I took that to mean guns were ok in the lobby, just not ok going into the actual jail portion. This is just what I have noticed, this is not law.

You are correct, wolfy. However, how do you define "very basic?" For example, do you know whether you can legally carry your handgun into a school? What school? High school? Pre-school? College campus?

What constitutes a "government facility?" A courthouse? A police station? A post office?

It is incumbent upon ALL of us to learn what we can about our rights to carry. To fail to do so only invites personal disaster for us. I commend the OP for asking the question. Oh, and BTW, if you go to www.in.gov and search for a list of places where you cannot carry legally, let me know when you find it.

I agree. None of us are experts in every detail of the law, especially in situations we don't frequently find ourselves in. If you don't know, then ask. If you can't ask a gun related question on this website, then where else? Nothing wrong with asking a question. The mistake would be in not asking.

If the law were simple, we wouldn't need lawyers. The post office is not a government entity. It's a private company backed by the government. According to everything I can find, the post office is a gun-free zone. My local PO has no signage to that effect. Can I leave it in my car? Can I even drive onto the property to the drive-up drop box?

According to IN law, you can have a gun in your car on school property if you're picking up or dropping off. What if you're getting out of the car to walk them inside? Can you leave it in the car, or do you have to remain in your vehicle?

If this were the case, you would know it is not a CCW, but rather a License to Carry Handgun (LTCH).

Just because you took the driver's test and passed does not mean you know all the rules and regulations of the road. Do you know the distance at which you must signal before turning? Or the distance to signal a turn when approaching a traffic signal? Do you know the legal distance one can park on the approach to a traffic signal or sign? Under what circumstances are you allowed to turn left on red?

In regards to the OP's question. I have no plans to visit a jail and am not current on the legalities of carrying or possessing a firearm at such a place. However, I do have a general idea of what is legal about carrying there, but when/if the event arises I would want to make sure I knew any specifics before visiting. I'm pretty sure the OP is doing the same thing and trying to be a good, little gun owner.

For somebody who is being very critical, on a public forum, you should also be aware that its good manners, and also smart, to know proper English skills.

For instance, when using the word "I", it's capitalized. NOT lower case. And you should also use proper sentence skills. Don't use TEXT skills.

    Just sayin'.

LOL. I was trying to figure out how to gently break that tidbit to wolfy, since he seems to be so critical of details, but when I went back to read it again before commenting, I saw that it had been edited.

See, wolfy? Even YOU can learn something here on INGO! :D

Post offices are a gray area - one that's not yet been tested in the courts. Most aren't willing to be the Test Case.

You CANNOT leave your firearm in your vehicle while escorting a child to the door unless you park off school property. You MUST remain in control of the vehicle. That is plainly spelled out in the I.C.

I seriously doubt you know all of the traffic laws in Indiana. Saying you know all traffic laws because you passed the drivers test is like saying you know every gun law because you passed the background check on your carry permit.

Nobody knows all the answers and everybody at some point has to ask the questions. Dont be so hard on somebody just because you know the answer to one question they dont.
