I may not want to at 50 yds... unless it was thicker-than-normal AR500.

I'd not worry about it at 100 or beyond. HOWEVER, if I saw signs of abuse at 100 yards, I'd stop.

check the bullet with a magnet
if the bullet sticks to the magnet, it has a steel core and you don't want to shoot that at any steel plates.

    .
Not a problem, provided no steel (as stated above).

Just don't get closer than 100 yards. (which is a damned good procedure with large rifles anyway)

Depends... Just FMJ would be fine (@100 plus preferably). Steel core punches holes.

It does? Isn't the steel core "mild steel" (not armor piercing)? I would think that the AR500 would be a lot tougher stuff. I've shot mine with surplus ammo (100 yards +) before and didn't even see any pitting. :dunno:

I'm embarrassed.... I saw "50,100,200 yards" and thought 50,100,200 yards.

Which works out to roughly 28,500 miles. Or roughly 3,000 miles further than the circumference of the earth. Which is a far distance.

So even with a sub MOA rifle, your target would need to be 9.5 miles in diameter to have a hope.

So my initial thought was... "no", you can't.

    :ugh:

Can i shoot surplus russian 7.62x54r 147grn fmj at ar500 targets swing at 50,100,200 yards ?

I've shot this 3/8" AR500 with Russian surplus around 250 times from roughly 80 yards. It barely leaves a dimple. The big dimples you see are from 5.56.

View attachment 40641 Ok now that we see it will hold up how about this size of target. 50,100,200 yards

Depends on how good your eyes are. :): I've got a 16" round gong that I use up to 300 m., but that's getting out close to the limit of what I can easily see with iron sights. That target in your pic should be fine I think out to 200 yards anyway.
